Chapter 14 - VIVIAN TAKES THE TWINS

We found them in forty-three minutes.
It felt like forty-three years.
Vivian had taken Oliver and Emma to a park.
No kidnapping plan.
No escape.
She wanted ice cream with her grandchildren.
That almost made me angrier.
"You knew you weren't authorized."
Vivian held Emma against her chest.
"I am their grandmother."
"Give me my daughter."
She did.
Ryan took Oliver.
Police stood nearby.
Vivian looked humiliated.
Good.
Then Oliver started crying for her.
Nothing stayed simple.
Vivian had used an outdated daycare form.
The center had failed to update its system.
I wanted everyone fired.
Naomi stopped me.
Again.
The daycare director apologized and changed procedures.
One employee received retraining.
Nobody lost a career because I was furious.
That was new for me.
Vivian faced a temporary no-contact order.
Ryan supported it.
She stared at her son.
"You're choosing her."
Ryan shook his head.
"I'm choosing the rule you broke."
Vivian slapped him.
Right there in the parking lot.
Everyone froze.
Ryan did not retaliate.
He touched his cheek.
Then said, "That's exactly why."
Vivian's face crumpled.
For the first time, I wondered how often she had hit him when he was young.
Later he told me.
"Enough."
"Why didn't you ever say?"
He laughed without humor.
"Look at how I handled everything else."
There was no neat explanation.
Childhood did not excuse adulthood.
It did explain some of the shape.
Ryan asked whether I hated him.
"Sometimes."
He nodded.
"Fair."
Then he said, "I hated you too."
That surprised me.
"Why?"
"Because every time I failed, you paid the bill and moved on. I started feeling unnecessary."
"So you forged a loan application?"
"No."
He looked at me.
"That part was greed and panic."
Finally.
A sentence that did not hide behind pain.
Then Naomi called.
The prosecutor wanted to interview me.
Not about Ryan.
About the home-control shutdown the night I left.
Vivian had filed a complaint claiming I deliberately endangered residents by cutting utilities.

My revenge had just become evidence.
