Chapter 1 - THE BRUISE MARGARET HID

Ryan stayed outside the gate for twenty minutes.

He called eleven times.

I answered none of them.

Inside, Oliver discovered the pantry and asked for crackers.

Emma would not leave Margaret's lap.

"Mom, put her down."

"I'm fine."

"You can barely close your hand."

Margaret smiled too quickly.

"I've had worse days."

That sentence bothered me.

I called Dr. Patel, who had treated her arthritis for years.

When I told Margaret he was coming, she became angry.

"I don't need a doctor."

"You have bruises."

"I told you. I fell."

"Then a doctor can tell me whether the floor had fingers."

She looked at me.

That was cruel.

I knew it immediately.

"I'm sorry."

"No, you're angry."

"Yes."

"Don't make me pay for what they did."

I stopped.

My mother had always been better at finding the sentence I was avoiding.

Dr. Patel arrived after nine.

The wrist bruises were consistent with a hard grip.

The cheek could have come from a fall.

Or a strike.

There was also an older bruise beneath Margaret's shoulder blade.

I had not seen that one.

"How old?" I asked.

"Maybe ten days."

I looked at Mom.

I had been in New York ten days.

She pulled her cardigan closed.

"Claire."

"Who touched you?"

Silence.

Then the gate intercom rang.

Vivian stood outside wearing a coat over her nightgown.

"I need my medication."

I stared at the screen.

I paid for that medication.

It was inside the dark house across the street.

"Ryan can get it."

"He left."

"Where?"

Vivian's face tightened.

"I don't know."

Then Margaret spoke behind me.

"Let her in."

I turned.

"No."

"Claire."

"No."

Margaret's voice became very small.

"Please. I need to tell her something before Ryan comes back."

Vivian heard her through the intercom.

Her expression changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

And my mother whispered, "She knows what really happened to my face."
