Chapter 8 - The Brother in Room 412

Vanessa slapped Dominic.
Not hard enough to move him.
Hard enough to make the room silent.
"Where is Julian?"
Dominic did not react.
"I don't know."
"The note says you do."
"The note is trying to split us."
I laughed without humor.
"Congratulations. It's working."
Mateo traced the package through three fake courier accounts and one real camera image.
The sender had come from Whitmore Memorial Hospital.
Room 412 was registered to a patient under the name John Vale.
I went with Vanessa because she refused to stay behind.
Dominic came because he refused to let either of us go alone.
Family therapy, mafia edition.
Room 412 was empty.
Fresh sheets.
Warm coffee.
A chessboard halfway through a game.
Vanessa touched the black knight.
"Julian always opened with this."
A nurse entered.
"Can I help you?"
Vanessa showed her brother's picture.
The nurse went pale.
"That's Mr. Vale."
Vanessa grabbed the bed rail.
"How long has he been here?"
"On and off for years."
Dominic turned to me.
"I didn't know."
I believed him.
That scared me because I was starting to know what his lies looked like.
The nurse said Julian had left twenty minutes earlier with a woman listed as his emergency contact.
"Name?" Vanessa asked.
The nurse checked.
"Celeste Whitmore."
Vanessa's mother.
Vanessa sat down.
"She told me he died."
Her cruelty suddenly had a new shape.
Not an excuse.
A shape.
We pulled security footage.
Celeste walked beside a thin man with a cane and dark glasses.
Julian.
Alive.
He stopped near the elevator and looked directly at the camera.
Then he lifted his hand.
Two fingers.
A martial arts signal.
I knew it.
We had used it in tournaments to mean switch sides.
Vanessa stared at me.
"What does that mean?"
"He's telling us not to follow the obvious route."
We checked the stairwell footage instead.
Julian had slipped away from Celeste for nineteen seconds.
Long enough to hide something under a fire extinguisher cabinet.
We found a flash drive.
On it was a video.
Julian sat in the same hospital room.
"Vanessa, if you're seeing this, Mom finally lost control of the situation. Good."
Vanessa started crying.
Julian continued.
"Avery Carter, your father saved my life. But he also did something you may never forgive."
I stopped breathing.
"Thomas made the first payment into the Black Ledger."
Dominic looked at me.
Julian leaned toward the camera.
"Your father wasn't only collecting evidence against the conspiracy."
He paused.
"For three years, he helped run it."
