Chapter 17 - Keene's Real Patient

Dr. Keene had not been Mom's doctor by accident.

He had been assigned to her.

But Julian insisted Keene was not loyal to Celeste in the simple way we assumed.

"Samuel kept people alive," Julian said. "Badly. Illegally. Sometimes cruelly. But alive."

"He poisoned my mother," I said.

"He also falsified her lab results so Celeste believed Linda was too sick to be a threat."

I stared at him.

Again, the same impossible pattern.

Harm disguised as protection.

Protection that was still harm.

We visited Keene under federal guard.

This time he had no strength left for half-truths.

"Thomas met Luca that night," he said. "Luca had the master ledger. Celeste's men were already coming."

"Why were you there?"

"Thomas called me. He had been exposed to smoke and solvent at Halcyon. His kidneys were failing."

My throat tightened.

"Dad was sick too?"

Keene nodded.

"Very."

"What happened in the motel?"

"Luca was shot before he arrived. He collapsed inside. Thomas tried to stop the bleeding."

"Who shot him?"

"Celeste's security."

"And Dad?"

Keene looked toward the camera in the corner.

"Thomas left through the bathroom window with the ledger."

"Then where did he go?"

"I don't know."

I almost snapped.

Keene raised one shaking hand.

"But I know he was alive two years later."

The room went silent.

Dominic leaned forward.

"How?"

"Because someone sent me a blood sample. Thomas's genetic markers. A note asking whether the kidney damage had stabilized."

"Where from?"

"Canada."

Mom began crying.

My father may have lived years after we buried him.

I did not know whether to feel hope or rage.

Keene continued.

"That's when Celeste ordered me to keep Linda's exposure marker active. She believed Thomas checked on Linda through medical records. If her marker changed, he might know the network had been compromised."

"So my mother was bait."

"Yes."

I stood up and walked to the wall because if I stayed close to Keene I might forget every lesson June ever taught me.

Dominic said quietly, "Avery."

"Don't."

"I'm not telling you to calm down."

Good.

I was tired of people saying that to women right before explaining why our anger was inconvenient.

Keene gave us one final thing.

A safety deposit box number in Toronto.

"Thomas told me if Linda ever missed two dialysis sessions in a row, send this to Avery."

Mom stared at him.

"Why two?"

Keene swallowed.

"Because it meant Celeste had stopped caring whether Linda lived."

Before we could leave, Vanessa called.

Her voice shook.

"Avery, turn on the news."

Every local station carried the same breaking story.

A leaked video from the birthday party showed only the last six seconds.

Me throwing Vanessa to the floor.

No first slap.

No cake.

No insult about Mom.

Headline:

DELIVERY DRIVER ATTACKS WHITMORE HEIRESS AT MORETTI ESTATE.

Then my old competition records appeared onscreen.

FORMER MARTIAL ARTS CHAMPION WITH VIOLENT PAST.

Vanessa whispered, "My mother just made you the criminal."

I looked at Dominic.

He looked at the screen.

Then a federal arrest warrant appeared under my name.

For assault.

I looked through the glass at Keene, then at Mom down the hall. I was still angry. Still scared. But I was not running from either feeling anymore.

Dominic nodded. "Maybe strength is staying when leaving would be easier."

"And look how that worked out."

"Thomas thought that too."

"I used to think being strong meant nobody could see this," I said, holding up my hands.

Outside Keene's room, I stopped at the vending machines and realized my hands were shaking. Dominic stood beside me without speaking. For once, he did not offer money, a plan, or an order. He simply waited.

And attempted extortion.
