Chapter 18 - I Stopped Running

My first instinct was to run.

That surprised me.

I had always imagined bravery felt like standing your ground.

Sometimes bravery was recognizing your body wanted to protect itself before your mind had finished deciding.

Dominic could have hidden me.

He offered.

"I have places they won't find you."

"That is exactly how this gets worse."

Vanessa agreed.

"If she disappears, Mom owns the story."

So I did the thing nobody expected.

I surrendered.

On camera.

With three reporters filming and my lawyer reading a statement beside me.

Dominic hated it.

"This is a mistake."

"Maybe. But it's my mistake."

That mattered.

For eight years, everybody had made choices for me in the name of protection.

No more.

The police booked me.

Fingerprint ink.

Cold bench.

A woman in the next holding cell asked if I was "the cake fighter."

I said, "Apparently."

She gave me a thumbs-up.

It was the first funny thing all day.

Outside, Vanessa held a press conference.

She admitted she slapped me first.

She admitted she had ordered my deliveries to provoke me.

She admitted the video had been edited.

Then she accused her own mother of manipulating evidence.

Celeste responded within an hour by releasing Vanessa's psychiatric records.

Private records.

Old treatment for panic attacks after Julian "died."

It was cruel and effective.

The public did exactly what Celeste wanted.

They stopped asking about Harbor Fund and started debating whether Vanessa was unstable.

My bail hearing was scheduled for morning.

Then Julian walked into a federal field office alive.

Everything changed.

A dead heir returning from the grave made better television than a delivery driver in cake.

Whitmore Health stock fell fourteen percent before noon.

My charges were not dropped.

But the extortion allegation collapsed when Julian verified the Harbor documents.

I was released pending investigation.

Mom met me outside the courthouse.

She hugged me so hard my ribs hurt.

"Never do that again."

"Get arrested? I'll put it on the list."

Then she coughed.

Hard.

Blood touched the tissue.

My stomach dropped.

We rushed her to the private clinic.

Her kidney function had worsened sharply.

The toxicologist found no new cadmium exposure.

That was the good news.

The bad news was stranger.

Mom had been receiving the wrong dialysis solution for six months.

Every batch number traced back to a Whitmore supplier.

Dominic asked, "Can we prove Celeste ordered it?"

The doctor shook his head.

"Not from the batch records."

Then a nurse entered holding Mom's personal medical file.

"Mrs. Carter, we found this taped inside the back cover."

A letter.

Dad's handwriting.

Not eight years old.

The paper had a manufacturing date from last year.

Mom sat down.

I opened it.

Avery,

If Linda is reading this, I waited too long.

If you are reading it, they found her first.

I could barely breathe.

At the bottom was one line.

I folded the jacket and left it at home. I did not need a costume to prove I had been a fighter. I needed to make the next choice without letting fear, pride, Dominic, Vanessa, Mom, Dad, or the internet make it for me.

"Then lose as yourself."

I touched the old patch on the sleeve. "What if I lose tomorrow?"

"Do you? You used to define yourself by winning. Then by taking care of Linda. Then by surviving. None of those are wrong. None are complete."

"I know who I am."

June sat beside me. "I brought it because the news is about to tell you who you were. Violent athlete. Angry daughter. Broke driver. Whatever fits their segment."

I laughed.

"Absolutely not. It looks terrible with everything."

"You think wearing that to court will help?"

She placed the jacket on the couch. CARTER ran across the back in faded white letters.

"Your face asked."

"I didn't ask anything."

"No," I said immediately.

The night before I surrendered, June came to the apartment with my old competition jacket.

I'M SORRY I LET YOU THINK I WAS DEAD.
