Chapter 16 - Why Dad Stayed Dead

Mom did not deny it.
That was almost worse.
We moved Julian to a Moretti safe property before sunrise. He needed medical care, but he refused any Whitmore hospital.
I sat across from Mom in the kitchen while the sky turned gray.
"Six months."
She cried silently.
"Avery—"
"Six months you knew my father was alive."
"He was hiding."
"From who?"
"Everyone."
"Including me."
"Especially you."
I stood so fast my chair fell backward.
"Why?"
Mom wiped her face.
"Because you were nineteen and angry. You would have found him. You would have followed him. You would have fought anyone who tried to stop you."
She was right.
I hated that.
"So you let me bury him."
"He watched the funeral from a car two blocks away."
That image destroyed something in me.
Dad sitting alone while I stood beside a sealed casket believing my life had ended.
"Why didn't he come home after six months?"
Mom looked at Julian.
He answered.
"Because Thomas found out the conspiracy was bigger than Halcyon."
Whitmore Care had acquired clinics in four states.
The same settlement pattern appeared in each.
Industrial exposure.
Quiet medical payments.
Doctors who changed diagnoses.
Families pressured into silence.
The Black Ledger was not one scandal.
It was a business model.
Dominic looked through the files.
"My father knew?"
Julian nodded.
"Carlo tried to pull out. Celeste had leverage on him."
"What leverage?"
Julian looked at me before answering.
"Luca Moretti."
Dominic's cousin.
The man who looked almost exactly like him.
Luca had not just worked for Whitmore.
He had impersonated Dominic in meetings, photographs, and one critical bank authorization.
"Why?" Dominic asked.
"Because Celeste needed the Moretti name attached to transactions Dominic never approved."
Dominic sat back.
His reputation had been used as camouflage.
That did not make him innocent of everything else.
But it changed this.
Reader engine, if my life had one, was cruelly efficient.
Every answer made the next question worse.
We finally asked the one that had been sitting between us.
"Where did Thomas go after six months?" I said.
Julian looked down.
"He went to meet Luca."
"Why?"
"Luca said he wanted out. He offered the master ledger in exchange for protection."
"Did Dad get it?"
Julian shook his head.
"Nobody knows."
Mom whispered, "Thomas called me that night."
I stared at her.
"What did he say?"
"He said, 'If Avery asks, tell her I finally did one thing clean.'"
"And then?"
"Nothing."
Dominic's phone rang.
Mateo answered from the security office.
"Boss, we found old traffic footage from the meeting location."
The screen showed Dad entering a motel room.
Twenty minutes later, Luca arrived.
Ten minutes after that, a third person entered.
My mother made a sound beside me.
The third person was Dr. Samuel Keene.
Julian nodded. "Maybe that's the trick. Survive long enough to choose before everyone else chooses for you."
"I want my mother healthy. I want my father to stop being a mystery. The rest... I don't know."
"Do you want it?"
I understood more than I wanted to. "People keep trying to give me my old life back too."
"My life back." He looked through the rehab-room window. "I thought that meant my name, the company, money, all of it. Now I'm not sure."
"What did you say?"
He grew quiet. "Thomas visited me after Halcyon. More than once. He kept asking what I wanted if the truth came out."
"Clearly."
"I was sixteen and emotionally sophisticated."
"I remember you trying to kick me after the bell."
"And there it is." He smiled. "You really don't remember me after the tournament, do you?"
He was right. I handed him the cane. "Your left hip is compensating."
"You're evaluating my balance. Fighter thing."
"I'm not staring."
"You don't have to stare," he said.
That afternoon, I went with Julian to physical therapy. He could walk, but every step cost him.
The man who had spent eight years slowly poisoning her.
