Chapter 14 - Vanessa Chose a Side

Dominic wanted to go after Celeste immediately.

I blocked the library door.

He looked at me.

"Move."

"No."

His security team stared at me like I had volunteered to headbutt a train.

"Avery."

"You told me guessing wrong gets people killed. Remember?"

His jaw tightened.

"That was before I heard her threaten my father."

"Exactly why you're not thinking clearly."

For a long second, neither of us moved.

Then Dominic stepped back.

Mateo exhaled like he had been holding his breath for a week.

Vanessa said, "She's right."

Dominic looked at her.

Vanessa flinched but continued.

"Mom wants you angry. Angry people become predictable."

The sentence sounded familiar because it was exactly what Vanessa had done to me with the birthday cake.

She saw me realize it.

"Yeah," she said quietly. "I learned from the best."

We built a plan around Harbor Fund's annual charity gala two nights later.

Every Whitmore board member would attend.

So would hospital donors, state officials, and enough cameras to make disappearing difficult.

Vanessa would appear publicly after her mother declared her unstable.

I would bring beneficiary records.

Dominic would bring the recording.

It sounded almost clean.

Which meant it was definitely going to go badly.

Before the gala, I went to June's gym.

She put gloves on me and pointed at the heavy bag.

"Hit it."

"I don't need therapy."

"Good. This is not therapy. Your hands are slow."

That insult worked better than encouragement.

For forty minutes, I moved like the girl I had buried.

Jab.

Turn.

Knee.

Angle out.

My lungs burned.

I felt alive and furious and sad all at once.

June said, "You quit after Thomas died because fighting reminded you of him."

"I had bills."

"Also true."

"Don't psychoanalyze me while holding pads."

"Then stop making it easy."

I laughed despite myself.

That night, Vanessa came to my apartment alone.

She brought my mother's favorite soup.

Mom made her taste it first.

"Fair," Vanessa said.

After dinner, Vanessa apologized.

Not a polished rich-person apology.

A bad one.

"I liked hurting you," she admitted. "Not because of you. Because I was angry at my mother, Dominic, Julian, myself. You were safe to hurt. That makes it worse."

I appreciated the honesty more than I wanted to.

"I don't forgive you."

"I know."

"I may never."

"I know."

Her phone buzzed.

She read the message and went pale.

"What?"

She handed it to me.

Security footage showed Julian being pushed into a car.

Timestamp: five minutes earlier.

The sender was Celeste.

Message:

COME TO THE GALA ALONE OR YOUR BROTHER DIES FOR REAL THIS TIME.

Vanessa looked at me.

"I'm going."

"Not alone."

"She'll kill him."

"She may kill him anyway."

Vanessa's voice broke.

"Then what do I do?"

I thought of every person who had decided what truth I could handle "for my own safety."

"You tell us everything," I said. "Then we choose together."

Vanessa nodded.

Then she told us the one secret she had held back.

"Julian isn't just a witness."

She swallowed.

Humor did not repair anything between us. But it changed the air enough that I could see what repair might require: not one apology, but a long series of choices when cruelty would have been easier.

"Good," Vanessa said.

Dominic called from across the room, "I can hear you."

"That's different. Dominic tips like a guilty Catholic. My mother pays like a contract lawyer."

"I took a hundred from Dominic the first night."

Then her face changed. "Avery, if my mother offers you money, don't take it."

She winced. "Fair."

"Pick a year."

"For what?"

"Try sorry."

"If Julian is alive, I don't know what to say to him."

For the first time since the birthday party, she laughed for real. The sound died quickly.

"You live in a mansion. You'll survive."

Vanessa looked at me. "See what I live with?"

Mateo, standing nearby, said, "I do not."

"No," he said. "Mateo does."

She stared at it. "You trust me with communications again?"

Before we separated for the night, Dominic handed Vanessa a new phone.

"He's the legal owner of Whitmore Health."
