Chapter 6 - THE EXECUTIVE WHO WARNED THEM

The access log showed one name.

Graham Vale.

Chief Retail Banking Officer.

Twenty-eight years at the bank.

Ethan’s father had hired him.

Graham taught Ethan how to read a balance sheet when Ethan was sixteen.

He sent Christmas gifts.

He called Martha “Mrs. R.”

Martha sat very still.

Ethan looked like someone had punched him.

“He accessed your profile thirty-two minutes after the incident.”

“Why?”

“Then called Claire.”

“Maybe he was checking on me.”

Ethan knew that was weak.

So did Martha.

Graham arrived voluntarily.

He smiled at Martha.

“I’m so sorry.”

She watched him.

“For what?”

“What happened.”

“Which part?”

His smile tightened.

The slap?

The fees?

The erased video?

The warning call?

He chose carefully.

“The branch treatment.”

Martha nodded.

“Thank you.”

Then Priya asked.

“Why did you access her profile?”

Graham said.

“Because Ethan called Security.”

“He didn’t give her name.”

“I inferred.”

“Then why call Claire?”

“To tell her there was executive attention.”

“Why?”

“So she could preserve records.”

Priya placed the deletion timestamps on the table.

The branch backup was erased five minutes after Graham’s call.

Graham’s face barely moved.

“That’s unfortunate.”

Martha almost laughed.

Unfortunate.

Then Priya produced text messages from Claire.

G: CLEAN UP MIDTOWN BEFORE E SEES THE NUMBERS.

Claire had deleted her side.

Graham had not.

His attorney asked for a break.

Too late.

Ethan stood.

Graham looked at him.

“Son.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Don’t.”

Martha felt that one.

Graham tried again.

“You don’t understand the retail business.”

“I own it.”

“You inherited it.”

The room went quiet.

Ethan stared.

Graham realized what he said.

Then doubled down.

“Your father built this bank.”

“And you think that means I owe you silence?”

“I think it means you shouldn’t burn the institution down over one bad branch.”

Martha spoke.

“One bad branch charged three-point-six million in fake fees.”

Graham turned.

“I was speaking to Ethan.”

“No.”

Martha’s voice stayed soft.

“You were speaking around me.”

“People did that all day.”

His face changed.

Then Priya asked the question that cracked the room.

“Where did the fee money go?”

Graham said.

“Operating revenue.”

Priya shook her head.

“No.”

“Eight hundred thousand went into a consulting account.”

She slid the page forward.

Beneficiary.
