Chapter 17 - MARGARET BLAKE

Margaret denied theft.

Called it authorized grantmaking.

There were no grant approvals.

No board minutes.

No recipient reports.

Money paid for galas.

Consultants.

A car service.

Then a townhouse renovation labeled “community event space.”

Martha visited the townhouse.

Italian marble.

Wine cellar.

Very community.

Federal agents charged Margaret.

She cried on television.

Said Ethan was persecuting his father’s old friends.

Ethan remained on leave.

That helped.

Priya authorized nothing without independent counsel.

Martha watched the process from outside.

That helped more.

Then Margaret made one final accusation.

Samuel had approved the transfers verbally.

Dead men are useful witnesses when they cannot object.

Except Samuel had recorded meetings.

One audio file captured Margaret asking for charity money.

Samuel said.

“No.”

She laughed.

“Your name is on the fund.”

“So?”

“People trust it.”

“That’s why you can’t use it.”

The recording ended.

Martha smiled.

“Still annoying.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Very.”

Margaret took a plea.

Restitution included.

The townhouse sold.

Samuel’s charity restored.

Martha asked that the money support legal aid for elderly banking customers.

Ethan agreed.

Then she corrected him.

“You don’t agree.”

“It’s my charity now.”

He raised both hands.

“Sorry.”

She smiled.

“Better.”

The board asked Ethan to return as CEO.

He refused.

Temporarily.

“I need the monitors to finish.”

Some shareholders panicked.

Stock dipped.

Then stabilized.

Priya stayed interim.

Employees began trusting the process more than the personality.

That pleased Martha.

Ethan less so.

Good.

Then the bank announced a customer-rights forum at the Midtown branch.

Same lobby.

Same marble.

Martha was invited to speak.

She said no.

Then Evelyn called.

“You’re going.”

Martha sighed.

“Why?”

“Because I bought a new dress.”

“That is not a reason.”

“It is at my age.”

May you like

Martha went.
