Chapter 13 - MALIK

Malik’s phone went off at 7:12 a.m.

His apartment was empty.

His backpack remained.

USB copies gone.

Priya immediately feared witness intimidation.

Martha feared worse.

Then Malik called from a borrowed phone.

“I’m okay.”

“Where are you?”

“Penn Station.”

“Why?”

“My mother got a threat.”

He sounded ashamed.

As if fear were misconduct.

A note had been pushed under her door.

YOUR SON TALKS.

YOUR FAMILY PAYS.

Malik panicked.

He planned to take his mother to Philadelphia.

Martha said.

“Good.”

Priya stared at her.

Martha continued.

“Get her safe.”

“Then come back if you want.”

Malik was silent.

“I thought you’d tell me to testify.”

“No.”

“I need you to stay alive more than I need a dramatic entrance.”

Priya smiled faintly.

Malik’s mother entered federal protection temporarily.

Malik chose to return.

His choice.

That mattered.

At the hearing, the auditorium was full.

Former customers.

Employees.

Reporters.

Shareholders.

Ethan sat in the audience.

No CEO chair.

Martha sat beside Evelyn Price.

Evelyn brought hard candy.

Loud wrappers.

Perfect.

Priya opened with facts.

Then Hannah Brooks spoke for the customers.

Then Claire Hollis testified.

She admitted managers were trained to reduce low-profit customers.

She named Graham.

Then Paul.

Paul’s attorney objected publicly.

Wrong setting.

No judge.

People laughed.

Then Malik walked onstage.

Daniel Thompson’s face appeared on a video screen from detention.

Malik played the lobby footage.

Martha watched herself fall.

The room made one sound.

A low collective breath.

Then Malik played older clips.

Mr. Ruiz.

The veteran.

The woman with the speech disability.

Evelyn’s arrest.

No music.

No narration.

Just behavior.

Martha understood then why video scared people like Daniel.

It removed the language they hid inside.

When Malik finished, Paul stood and walked out.

May you like

Federal agents met him at the door.
