Chapter 18 - BACK THROUGH THE GLASS DOORS

The glass doors opened automatically.
Martha stopped anyway.
Same lobby.
Different day.
No Daniel.
No Jessica.
No guards staring.
Malik now worked in corporate security investigations.
He stood near the entrance in a suit that did not quite fit.
Martha smiled.
“You look uncomfortable.”
“I am.”
“Good suit?”
“Borrowed.”
“Better.”
Evelyn arrived in purple.
Not the new dress.
Martha asked.
“What happened?”
“I changed my mind.”
“Of course.”
Former customers filled the lobby.
Some angry.
Some nervous.
Some just curious.
Priya spoke first.
No polished apology video.
She read specific failures.
Specific changes.
Specific restitution totals.
Then she gave the microphone to Martha.
Martha did not want it.
Evelyn shoved it into her hand.
Martha stared at the crowd.
“I came here for fifty thousand dollars.”
A few laughs.
“I still haven’t withdrawn it.”
More laughter.
“My roof contractor hates me.”
She paused.
“What happened to me mattered.”
“But it mattered before anyone knew my son owned the bank.”
Silence.
“That is the only thing I want you to remember.”
She looked at the teller line.
“A person should not have to be connected to someone powerful before humiliation becomes unacceptable.”
No applause at first.
Good.
People listened.
Then an older man raised his hand.
“Are you changing the fees?”
“Yes.”
Priya answered from the side.
Another woman.
“What if staff retaliate after complaints?”
Malik answered.
“Independent hotline.”
Questions became practical.
Better than applause.
Then Martha saw a young teller at the far counter.
She looked terrified.
A customer was shouting at her.
Martha walked over.
The customer snapped.
“She won’t waive this fee!”
The teller whispered.
“I don’t have authorization.”
Martha looked at the man.
“She’s not your punching bag.”
He blinked.
Martha looked at the teller.
“And he’s not a problem because he’s angry.”
Both stared at her.
“Find someone with authorization.”
The teller did.
Small.
Messy.
Real.

Changing a bank was harder than firing villains.
