Chapter 15 - THE BONUS POOL

Executives hated Martha’s idea.
That made her like it more.
Cancel the retention pool.
Fund restitution.
Some bonuses were contractual.
Others discretionary.
Lawyers negotiated.
Priya found clawback provisions.
Misconduct.
Risk failures.
Regulatory breach.
Enough.
Twenty-four million moved toward customer repayment.
Seven million remained disputed.
Ethan asked senior executives to waive part voluntarily.
Half did.
Some because they cared.
Some because cameras existed.
Martha did not need to sort motives.
Money returned either way.
Then unionized branch staff raised another issue.
Frontline employees had been pressured too.
Impossible sales targets.
Threats.
Write-ups.
One teller testified Daniel ordered staff to upsell accounts customers did not need.
Jessica had been excellent at it.
That was why he protected her.
The scandal expanded from customer discrimination to sales practices.
Again.
Martha groaned.
“Does this bank do anything normally?”
Ethan said.
“We have excellent ATMs.”
“Don’t joke.”
“I’m coping.”
She let him.
Regulators imposed a consent order.
Independent monitoring.
Executive clawbacks.
Customer restitution.
Policy changes.
No branch closures without review.
No relationship-quality metric tied to balance.
Mandatory complaint preservation.
Then came sentencing for Daniel.
Martha attended.
He looked smaller.
His attorney argued he had followed regional pressure.
The prosecutor agreed pressure existed.
Then showed theft.
Assault.
False police reports.
Witness intimidation.
Daniel asked to speak.
He looked at Martha.
“I’m sorry.”
She waited.
“I didn’t know who you were.”
Martha’s face changed.
Daniel heard it too late.
Wrong apology.
She stood when allowed.
“That’s the problem.”
He stared.
“You should have been sorry before you knew.”
No speech beyond that.
Daniel received prison time.
Jessica too.
Claire received probation and cooperation credit.
Graham awaited sentencing.
Then Ethan got a text.
Anonymous.
YOUR MOTHER WASN’T THE FIRST ROBINSON WE THREW OUT.
Attached was a photograph.
Samuel.
Outside the same Midtown branch.
Five years earlier.

A security guard had his hand on Samuel’s arm.
