Chapter 4 - The Offer

The offer arrived the next morning.

Not from Senator Vale.

From Preston.

He came alone.

No driver.

No lawyer.

He stood on Mara's cracked porch holding a folder.

She did not let him inside.

Roman's security car remained across the street.

Preston noticed it.

"You're really with him now?"

Mara's face hardened.

"Try another sentence."

He rubbed his hands over his face.

"Bianca was arrested."

"For assault?"

"Released pending review."

"Good."

"Mara, this is getting bigger."

"It was already bigger. I just didn't know."

Preston held out the folder.

"Take this."

Inside was a cashier's-check offer for $750,000.

A revised divorce settlement.

A mutual nondisparagement agreement.

And a resignation from Bianca's household dated retroactively to the week before the cemetery.

Mara stared.

"You want to rewrite time."

"I want you safe."

"From whom?"

"My father-in-law."

That was the first useful thing he had ever said without being forced.

Mara looked up.

"Why?"

Preston swallowed.

"Everett knows your mother kept records."

"How?"

"She confronted him."

"When?"

"Last year."

"What happened?"

"He told her the fund issue had been corrected decades ago."

"It wasn't."

"I know that now."

Mara studied his face.

"What do you know?"

Preston sat on the porch step because she still had not invited him inside.

Three years earlier, shortly before he left Mara, Charles Thorne told him Eleanor Whitfield had "become unstable" and was making claims about old settlement money.

Bianca's father offered Preston a partnership opportunity in a new logistics-development project if Preston helped "keep family disputes contained."

Mara felt cold.

"You divorced me for a project?"

"No."

He looked ashamed.

"I was already sleeping with Bianca."

At least honesty had arrived somewhere.

"But the deal made leaving easier."

Mara laughed once.

"How romantic."

Preston continued.

"After the divorce, Bianca insisted her household needed a new maid. I did not know she requested you specifically until months later."

"You stayed."

"Yes."

"You watched her call me the wrong name."

"Yes."

"You watched her cut my hours and then make me work unpaid nights."

"Yes."

Mara nodded.

He lowered his head.

No request for forgiveness.

Better.

"Why the money now?"

"Because Everett will offer more if you give him the files."

Mara stared.

"You came first."

"Yes."

"That doesn't make this noble."

"No."

"What does the retroactive resignation do?"

Preston hesitated.

"Separates Bianca from the assault as an employer."

Mara handed the folder back.

"So this protects her."

"And you."

"No."

Mara stepped closer.

"It protects the version where everyone fixes paper after hurting the person."

Preston closed the folder.

Then he looked toward Roman's car.

"Does Castellano know Vittorio got fund money?"

"Yes."

Preston went pale.

"You told him?"

"I played my mother's recording in front of him."

"Are you insane?"

Mara almost smiled.

"Apparently honesty is very dangerous around rich men."

Preston stood.

"Vittorio is still alive."

Roman had not mentioned that.

"Where?"

"No one knows exactly. He retired years ago."

"Retired from crime?"

Preston gave her a look.

Fair.

Then a second car pulled up.

Black government plates.

Two people stepped out.

One was Miriam Cross.

The other showed federal identification.

"Ms. Whitfield," he said. "I'm Special Agent Daniel Keane."

Mara's stomach tightened.

"We'd like to talk about your mother's records."

Preston started toward his car.

Keane looked at him.

"Mr. Thorne, we'd like you to stay."

Preston froze.

Mara looked from the agent to Roman's security car.

The safe, quiet bungalow suddenly felt like the center of every system her mother had tried to escape.

Then Keane said, "We also need to tell you something before Senator Vale's people do."

Mara waited.

"Your mother was cooperating with us before she died."
