Chapter 3 - The Recipe Box

Mara did not go back to Bianca's house.

Her agency contract said she could be fired for abandoning a shift.

She abandoned it.

Roman offered a hotel.

She declined.

She went to her mother's small bungalow in Cicero, which Mara had never sold because nobody wanted to buy a house with a leaking roof and a cracked foundation.

Roman sent a security car to park across the street.

Mara told him it could stay only if the men did not come inside.

He agreed.

The recipe box sat above the refrigerator.

Blue metal.

Dented corner.

Her mother had used it for recipes, warranty cards, stamps, and every document she did not trust herself to lose.

Mara opened it at the kitchen table.

Banana bread.

Chicken soup.

Property-tax receipts.

Then six envelopes marked MARA.

The first contained a letter written three years earlier.

If Preston ever makes you feel that poverty is proof you deserve less, remember he learned that from people who confuse money with character.

Mara closed her eyes.

Her mother had hated Preston by the end.

The second envelope contained copies of Mara's divorce documents with sticky notes.

Eleanor had highlighted a clause Mara never understood.

Confidentiality regarding household, political, or charitable matters learned through the Thorne or Vale families.

Why was that in an ordinary divorce?

Mara called her divorce attorney.

Retired.

He remembered.

"Preston's counsel insisted."

"Why?"

"They said you had worked events with Senator Vale."

"I served dinner at two fundraisers."

"I argued it was overbroad."

"Why did I sign?"

"You needed the settlement for your mother's treatment."

Mara felt sick.

Pressure again.

The third envelope contained a photograph.

Eleanor with Roman's older brother Luca.

He stood on crutches.

Behind them were six dockworker families.

Everyone held checks.

The backs listed amounts.

Small.

But real.

The fourth envelope held something different.

A USB drive.

Roman arrived twenty minutes later with attorney Miriam Cross, a former federal prosecutor who represented his legitimate businesses and, Mara suspected, spent half her life telling him no.

Miriam said, "We image the drive before opening anything."

Mara nodded.

Roman looked pleased.

"You like her."

"I like lawyers who annoy you."

"Most of them."

The copied drive contained spreadsheets.

Not a secret criminal ledger.

Claim reconciliations.

Eleanor had reconstructed the dockworker compensation program from bank statements, payroll records, beneficiary applications, and canceled checks.

Original promised benefits:

$18.6 million.

Documented family payments:

$11.2 million.

Administrative and legal expenses:

$2.1 million.

Unexplained:

$5.3 million.

The money flowed into three consulting entities.

One connected to Senator Vale's former law partner.

One to Preston's father, Charles Thorne.

One to a company owned by Roman's uncle, Vittorio Castellano.

Roman went completely still.

Mara looked at him.

"You knew."

"No."

"Your family took money too."

"That is what this says."

"Did your father know?"

Roman did not answer.

That was answer enough.

Miriam said, "We verify before conclusions."

Mara respected her more every minute.

The last file on the drive was an audio recording.

Eleanor's voice.

"If Mara is hearing this, then either I finally became brave or I ran out of time."

Mara covered her mouth.

Roman looked away.

Eleanor continued.

"The fund was robbed by men who publicly hated each other and privately agreed poor families would never compare paperwork."

Mara stared at the spreadsheets.

Politics.

Developers.

Organized crime.

All taking pieces.

Then Eleanor said:

"Roman Castellano does not know the whole story. Do not let him turn his ignorance into innocence."

Roman closed his eyes.

Mara looked at him.

"She really knew you."

He whispered, "Yes."

The recording continued.

"And if Senator Vale learns Mara has these files, he will not begin by threatening her."

Pause.

"He will begin by offering her a better life."
