Chapter 10 - Senator Vale's Version
Senator Everett Vale asked to testify voluntarily before the grand jury.
His lawyers called it transparency.
Mara called it strategy.
She did not attend.
Keane later shared only what could be shared.
Vale admitted participating in the original settlement structure.
Denied knowing funds were diverted.
Admitted Gideon Rusk handled later political relationships.
Denied directing Rusk to pressure Eleanor.
Admitted meeting Charles Thorne and Salvatore Castellano.
Called those meetings "stakeholder management."
Roman laughed when he heard.
"That is the most expensive phrase for corruption I've ever heard."
Miriam said, "You are not in a position to critique euphemisms."
Fair.
Vale's problem was email.
Old archived messages had survived.
One from 2003:
Need S. Castellano to calm claimants before press gets numbers.
Another:
Thorne counsel taking more than expected. Leave it. Keeps them aligned.
Another:
Eleanor W. asking questions again. Find out whether daughter is tied to Preston.
That last message was from only four years earlier.
Before Mara's divorce.
Senator Vale had known who she was.
He had tracked her connection to Preston.
The marriage became useful intelligence.
Mara felt nauseated.
"Did Preston know?"
Keane said, "No evidence yet."
Preston asked himself the same question.
He brought Mara his old phone backups.
Without being subpoenaed.
Messages with Bianca.
With her father.
Most ordinary.
Then one from the week before Preston filed divorce.
EVERETT: Clean break is best. Whitfield family carries old noise.
Preston had replied:
I understand.
Mara stared.
"You saw my name."
"I thought he meant your mother's accusations."
"You did understand."
"I understood there was conflict."
"And chose not to ask."
Preston looked down.
"Yes."
The pattern again.
Powerful people do not always need direct instructions.
Sometimes they supply context and let ambition finish the sentence.
Bianca's cooperation strengthened.
She admitted her father repeatedly described Mara as "dangerous through association."
She thought he meant Preston's ex-wife drama.
Only after finding Eleanor's folder did she realize it was political.
Still, she kept monitoring Mara.
Still, she slapped her.
Understanding motive did not erase conduct.
At a preliminary hearing, Bianca pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery for the cemetery assault under an agreement that did not resolve federal issues.
Mara gave a short statement.
"My pregnancy did not make the assault worse because pregnant women are more valuable. It made the risk different. The humiliation would have been wrong either way."
Bianca cried.
Mara did not look at her.
After court, reporters shouted whether Mara and Roman would marry.
Mara kept walking.
Roman, beside his attorney fifty feet away, heard.
He did not answer either.
At the parking garage, he said, "They're obsessed with marriage."
"They need a simpler plot."
He smiled.
"Do you?"
"What?"
"Want a simpler plot?"
Mara looked at him.
For months they had been co-parents-in-waiting.
Appointments.
Lawyers.
Occasional dinner.
No relationship label.
Roman had kissed her once since the bar.
After asking.
She stopped it.
Not because she did not want him.
Because wanting him and trusting his world were different questions.
"I want a safe child."
"Me too."
"I want my own income."
"Good."
"I want you to stop pretending legitimate businesses erase the rest."
His smile vanished.
"I know."
"Do you?"
Roman looked away.
Then said, "Keane's tax team found something."
Mara stiffened.
"What?"
"A current company paid consulting fees to Vittorio after I told everyone he was retired."
"Did you know?"
Roman took too long.
Mara's chest tightened.
"Roman."
"I knew he received money."
"For what?"
"I didn't ask."
There it was.
Again.
Mara stepped back.
"Then go ask."
Roman nodded.
No argument.
The next morning he flew to Florida.
Not to threaten Luca.
To find Vittorio.
