Chapter 18 - Miller's Ridge

Five years after the crash, the county replaced the old guardrail.

They added warning lights.

Runoff channels.

A pull-off area.

The road-safety nonprofit invited survivors to the dedication.

Evan asked me to go.

I almost refused.

Then I said yes.

We stood at the curve where the Subaru left the road.

My leg ached before we arrived.

The body remembers geography.

Evan stayed several feet away.

"Can I come closer?"

I nodded.

He stood beside me.

The hillside below looked smaller than memory.

That almost made it worse.

"I thought you were dead."

He said it quietly.

"I know."

"I remember being glad for maybe one second."

I looked at him.

He was crying.

"Then remember that too."

He flinched.

"You want me to?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because if you erase the ugliest part, you'll spend the rest of your life afraid it still controls you."

He stared at the road.

"I hated you."

"I know."

"I was wrong."

"About why."

He looked at me.

"What does that mean?"

"You were allowed to be angry that Daniel changed the trust without talking to you."

"You were allowed to miss your mother."

"You were allowed to resent me."

"You were not allowed to turn those feelings into my death."

Evan nodded.

"I understand."

For the first time, I believed him.

Not because he cried.

Because he did not ask me to make the truth softer.

We placed no flowers.

Nobody had died there.

That mattered too.

May you like

We drove away before dark.
