Chapter 13 - The Trial

Elaine rejected a plea.
She wanted a jury.
She believed she could explain herself.
That was her final arrogance.
Her attorney painted her as Rebecca's devoted sister.
The woman who protected Evan when Daniel remarried too quickly.
The woman who watched a stranger inherit Rebecca's home.
Some of that pain was real.
Then prosecutors showed the deed.
Rebecca's tape.
Daniel's recording.
The forged note.
The brake-line evidence.
The sedative in Evan's blood.
The loan documents.
Mark's testimony.
Miriam's emails.
Elaine's story collapsed under details.
Then Evan testified.
The courtroom allowed special protections because he was still a minor.
Elaine stared at him.
He could not look at her at first.
The prosecutor asked.
"Did Sarah Mercer steal your cabin?"
"No."
"Did she kill your father?"
"No."
"Did she ask you to hurt her?"
"No."
"What did Elaine tell you?"
Evan swallowed.
"That Sarah wanted everything."
"That Dad died because of her."
"That Mom would hate me if I let Sarah keep the cabin."
His voice broke.
"She told me love meant proving which side I was on."
Elaine cried.
Evan continued.
"I believed her."
The defense attorney asked.
"Weren't you responsible for your own actions?"
Evan nodded.
"Yes."
Elaine's attorney looked surprised.
Evan continued.
"I was manipulated."
"I was drugged."
"I was seventeen."
"And I still did things that hurt Sarah."
All four facts stood together.
The jury noticed.
So did I.
Then Elaine took the stand.
She said Rebecca asked her to protect Evan.
The prosecutor played Rebecca's tape.
If anyone ever tells you love means choosing them against someone else, be careful.
Elaine closed her eyes.
