Chapter 12 - Daniel's Death

The case against Elaine became enormous.
Attempted murder.
Fraud.
Forgery.
Conspiracy.
Evidence tampering.
Drugging Evan.
Charges connected to Daniel's death.
Mark cooperated.
Miriam cooperated.
Each wanted a smaller sentence.
Their stories matched more often than they conflicted.
Daniel had discovered Elaine's loans against the cabin.
He planned to remove her as nominee holder and establish a professional trustee.
Elaine panicked.
She told Mark to frighten him.
Mark modified the truck.
Daniel died.
Miriam helped bury the deed history.
Then Elaine began shaping Evan.
Not immediately.
Slowly.
A comment after dinner.
A story about Rebecca.
A complaint about me.
A forged letter.
A photo without context.
Manipulation did not begin with "kill your stepmother."
It began with "she doesn't really love you."
That frightened me more.
Evan entered residential trauma treatment voluntarily.
Not because he was dangerous forever.
Because what he had done mattered.
He had knowingly stayed in a vehicle he thought might crash.
He had watched me afterward.
Even drugged and manipulated, he had made choices.
His therapist refused simple labels.
Victim.
Offender.
Child.
All could be true.
I visited weekly.
The first month, he barely spoke.
Then one afternoon he asked.
"Do you hate me?"
I thought carefully.
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because hate would be easier."
He looked at me.
"I'm angry."
"I'm scared of you sometimes."
"I love you."
"I don't trust you yet."
His eyes filled.
"That's worse."
"I know."
It was also honest.
He nodded.
