Chapter 16 - Daniel's Last Letter
Evan opened the letter slowly.
Daniel apologized.
Not vaguely.
Specifically.
For avoiding the cabin conversation.
For letting Elaine speak for Rebecca.
For hiding Caleb's investigation.
For assuming silence would protect Evan from adult problems.
Then he wrote.
I taught you that adults handle secrets and children receive conclusions.
That was wrong.
Secrets left empty rooms.
Elaine filled them.
Evan cried quietly.
Daniel continued.
Sarah is not your mother.
Do not force her to be.
She is the woman I loved after your mother died.
You are allowed to care about her without betraying Rebecca.
You are allowed not to.
What you are never allowed to do is turn grief into permission to hurt someone.
Evan stopped reading.
I looked away to give him privacy.
He finished.
Then he handed me the page.
Daniel had written one line for me too.
Sarah,
If Evan ever comes back to you honestly, please do not confuse forgiveness with pretending.
I laughed through tears.
"At least he learned something."
Evan smiled weakly.
"Too late."
"Still learned."
We burned nothing.
Destroyed nothing.
The letters went into a family archive with the trust attorney.
Truth no longer needed hiding places.
Then Caleb announced he was retiring.
"For real this time."
Evan looked at him.
"You were never a trucker?"
Caleb smiled.
"I have a commercial license."
"That's not the same thing."
"No."
For the first time, Evan laughed at Miller's Ridge.
