Chapter 15 - The Cabin Without Ghosts

A year passed before Evan returned to the cabin.

He was eighteen.

He had completed treatment and probation conditions related to his role in the crash.

His criminal record remained limited because he had cooperated and because the court recognized the coercion and drugging.

But consequences existed.

He understood that.

We drove separately.

Caleb met us there.

The old floorboard remained loose.

The steel box was empty now.

Evidence had been archived.

Evan walked through the rooms.

Rebecca's photograph stood on the mantel.

Daniel's beside it.

He touched neither.

Then he went outside.

The lake was still.

"I used to think this place was proof Dad loved you more."

I stood beside him.

"He was trying to protect both of us."

"He did it badly."

"Yes."

Evan looked at me.

"You can say he failed."

"He failed."

That mattered.

Dead people do not need to become perfect.

Evan looked toward the water.

"I remember the crash every night."

"So do I."

"I remember asking if you were dead."

"So do I."

He swallowed.

"I don't know if the drug made me say it."

"Neither do I."

"That's worse."

"Maybe."

He looked at me.

"What do I do with that?"

"Live like the answer matters."

He nodded.

We sat on the dock.

Not mother and son.

Not yet.

Two people who survived the same lie from different sides.

Then Caleb handed Evan one final envelope.

Daniel had written it but never placed it in the lockbox.

Caleb had kept it under instructions.

The front read.
