Chapter 8 - The Forged Consent

Mark’s father was Douglas Vane.
Real estate money. Private clubs. Charity boards. The kind of man who made problems disappear by writing checks large enough that nobody wanted to ask what they were for.
He had never liked Lauren.
He liked heirs.
That distinction suddenly mattered.
Ortiz asked Lauren, “Why would Douglas know about a private adoption?”
Lauren sat down.
“Because Mark told him we were trying again.”
“Trying what?”
“Adoption. Douglas said if we gave him a grandchild before his seventieth birthday, he’d transfer Mark the voting shares in Vane Development.”
Ethan’s face twisted.
“You’re telling me a baby was tied to a corporate inheritance?”
“It wasn’t supposed to be like that.”
“Yet here we are.”
Lauren looked at me.
“Rachel, I swear I never agreed to take Rose by force.”
I believed that she had not imagined a kidnapping.
I did not yet believe she was innocent.
Ortiz requested Lauren’s messages with Douglas.
Most were formal.
Then they found one from six days earlier.
DOUGLAS: Your mother says the placement is guaranteed. No surprises this time.
LAUREN: Rachel hasn’t spoken to me about it.
DOUGLAS: Diane says discretion is part of the agreement.
LAUREN: I don’t like this.
DOUGLAS: Then decide whether you want to be a mother or spend your life asking permission to become one.
Lauren had replied with a single word.
Okay.
That word sat in the room like broken glass.
I asked, “Did you tell Mark?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because he would have stopped it.”
There it was.
Not innocence.
Choice.
Ethan turned away from his sister.
Ortiz said, “I need access to Diane’s phone and financial accounts.”
“They took her phone already,” Ethan said.
“Yes, but it’s locked.”
Caleb spoke from the couch.
“Grandma’s number is my birthday.”
Everyone looked at him.
He shrugged.
“She lets me play games.”
The officer unlocked Diane’s phone on the first attempt.
Within minutes, the detective found a hidden messaging app.
Most contacts were initials.
M was Marissa.
P was Patricia.
D was not Douglas.
Douglas appeared under his full name in ordinary texts.
The mysterious D had sent Diane instructions.
D: Ward stamp ready.
D: Consent template attached.
D: Nurse confirmed.
D: Payment must be cash after transfer.
Ethan read the thread.
“Who is D?”
Ortiz scrolled farther back.
Three months.
Six months.
Eleven months.
Then she stopped.
A photograph appeared in the chat.
It showed Marissa sitting at a restaurant beside a man in a navy suit.
I recognized him immediately.
Dr. Daniel Crest, the fertility specialist who had treated Lauren for two years.
Lauren whispered, “No.”
Ortiz zoomed in.
On the table between Dr. Crest and Marissa was the same yellow consent form found in Diane’s coat.
And behind them, reflected in the restaurant mirror, stood Nurse Patricia Shaw.
