Chapter 2 - Code Pink

The maternity floor changed in less than thirty seconds.

Steel doors dropped over both stairwells. Elevators froze. Security guards blocked every public exit while nurses moved room to room checking infants, mothers, wristbands, and visitors.

I tried to pull my IV loose.

“I’m getting up.”

“No, you’re not,” Ethan said.

“My baby is missing.”

“I know.” His voice broke on the last word. “And you had surgery four hours ago.”

“I don’t care.”

He crouched beside my bed and put both hands around mine.

“I do.”

Across the room, Diane sat in a chair with an ice pack against her face while a security officer stood beside her. Lauren paced near the window, pale and shaking.

The unknown baby had already been rushed back to Room 418. Her mother’s scream when the nurse wheeled her away traveled down the hallway and straight through me.

Caleb sat on the couch hugging his knees.

I called him over.

“Sweetheart, how did you see Grandma open the bracelet?”

He looked at Diane.

She immediately said, “Don’t interrogate him.”

Ethan turned.

“Speak again and I’ll have security remove you.”

Diane stared at him like she had never heard that tone from her son.

Caleb whispered, “I woke up when Grandma came in. You were sleeping. Daddy went to get coffee.”

I remembered. Ethan had been gone maybe twelve minutes.

“Grandma picked up Rosie,” Caleb continued. “Then a lady in blue clothes came in with another baby. Grandma said, ‘Hurry, before the nurse comes back.’”

Lauren stopped pacing.

“What lady?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you see her face?” Ethan asked.

“She had a mask.”

“What happened next?”

Caleb rubbed his eyes.

“The lady put the other baby in Rosie’s bed. Grandma opened Rosie’s bracelet with a little metal thing. She put something around the other baby. Then she told me I was dreaming.”

Diane stood.

“That is not what happened.”

Caleb flinched.

Ethan moved between them.

“Sit down.”

“He’s six, Ethan.”

“And he just found the only evidence you were too stupid to hide.”

A hospital administrator entered with a uniformed police officer and a woman in plain clothes who introduced herself as Detective Mara Ortiz.

She looked at Diane first.

“Mrs. Hart?”

Diane lifted her chin. “Diane Hart.”

“Your grandson says he witnessed you tampering with an infant security band.”

“He misunderstood.”

“Then you can clear that up downtown.”

Lauren stepped forward.

“You can’t arrest my mother because a child is confused.”

Ortiz looked at her.

“Who said anything about arrest?”

Lauren froze.

The detective smiled without warmth.

“That reaction was interesting.”

A security guard hurried in holding a tablet.

“We found something on camera four-B.”

The administrator took the tablet.

The footage showed the hallway outside my room at 5:41 that morning.

A woman in surgical scrubs pushed a covered bassinet toward our door.

Diane opened the door from inside.

The woman entered.

Six minutes later, she came back out.

This time, she was carrying a white hospital laundry bag.

The bag moved.

I stopped breathing.

Ethan grabbed the tablet.

“Zoom in.”

The guard did.

The woman turned toward the service elevator.

For one frame, her mask slipped below her chin.

Lauren made a small sound.

I looked at her.

“You know her.”

“No.”

“You do.”

“No.”

Detective Ortiz stepped closer.

“Ms. Hart, who is she?”

Lauren stared at the frozen image.

Then she whispered a name.

“Marissa Vale.”

Ethan frowned.

“Who the hell is Marissa Vale?”

Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.

“The woman Mom hired to help me get a baby.”
