Chapter 1 - The Open Bracelet

My mother-in-law had one of my newborn daughters in her arms when my six-year-old son said the sentence that stopped the whole room.

“Dad... that isn’t our baby.”

For one second, nobody moved.

Not my husband Ethan. Not my sister-in-law Lauren. Not the nurse standing by the medication cart. Not even Diane, my mother-in-law, who had just announced that because I had three daughters and Lauren had none, Lauren “got this one.”

I was still half numb from the emergency C-section. My abdomen felt like it had been split open with a hot wire. An IV tugged at my wrist when I tried to sit up.

“Caleb,” I whispered. “What did you say?”

My son pointed at the tiny hospital bracelet around the crying baby’s ankle.

“That’s not Rosie’s bracelet. Grandma opened it.”

Diane lunged toward the bassinet.

Ethan stepped in front of her.

“Don’t.”

She grabbed for his arm.

His open hand cracked across her cheek so sharply the sound bounced off the hospital walls.

Diane staggered backward into a rolling chair. The chair shot away and she hit the floor hard.

Lauren screamed, “Mom!”

The nurse moved faster than anyone else. She planted herself between Diane and the three bassinets, pulled a handheld scanner from her pocket, and scanned the electronic tag.

A red warning flashed.

The nurse’s face drained of color.

“This band has been opened.”

Ethan looked at his mother.

Diane’s cheek was already turning pink.

“It was loose,” she said.

“No,” the nurse replied. “These don’t come loose.”

Caleb grabbed Ethan’s shirt.

“Dad, Rosie has the little purple mark behind her ear.”

The nurse carefully lifted the baby’s cap and checked.

Nothing.

My blood went cold.

Our third daughter, Rose, had been born with a small violet birthmark behind her left ear. Ava had a dimple in her chin. Lily had a pale crescent on her shoulder. We had spent all night memorizing them because the girls looked so alike.

The baby in Diane’s arms had none of Rose’s marks.

The nurse hit the red button on the wall.

“Code Pink. Maternity west. Possible infant abduction.”

Sirens began sounding in the corridor.

Lauren backed away.

Ethan took the baby from Diane and handed her to the nurse.

“Whose child is that?”

“I don’t know yet,” the nurse said. “But she isn’t yours.”

I stared at the third bassinet.

The blanket was ours. The cap was ours. The name card still said ROSE HART.

But our daughter was gone.

Diane pushed herself off the floor.

“This is insane. I would never hurt a baby.”

Ethan’s voice became terrifyingly quiet.

“Then tell me where my daughter is.”

Diane looked at Lauren.

It lasted less than a second.

But I saw it.

So did Ethan.

Lauren’s hand flew to her mouth.

The nurse checked the unknown baby’s tag again, then turned the screen toward us.

The original patient name had been overwritten.

Under ROSE HART was another name.

BABY GIRL MORALES - ROOM 418.

The nurse whispered, “Oh my God.”

Then a security officer ran into the room.

“Room 418’s newborn is missing too.”

And somewhere inside that locked hospital, two babies had just vanished into the wrong lives.
