Chapter 15 - What Lauren Finally Admitted

The key was not metal.

It was a micro-storage device shaped like a small plastic capsule.

Diane had hidden it in her mouth during the first security search, then swallowed it when police moved her downstairs.

A hospital X-ray confirmed it was still inside her intestinal tract.

I almost admired the insanity of it.

Almost.

Crest believed the capsule contained an encrypted backup of his financial accounts.

Diane claimed she took it from Marissa because she no longer trusted them after Crest demanded more money.

“You were willing to kidnap my child,” Ethan told her through the jail phone, “but financial dishonesty offended you?”

Diane looked away.

The capsule was recovered under medical supervision and handed to federal investigators.

It did not contain bank records.

It contained something better.

Audio recordings.

Crest discussing prices.

Marissa assigning babies.

Patricia explaining security weaknesses.

And Diane herself negotiating for Rose.

The case no longer depended on anyone’s memory.

It had their voices.

Lauren asked to speak to me alone.

I nearly said no.

Then I remembered every night she had cried in my kitchen before any of this happened.

I agreed, not because I forgave her, but because I wanted the last missing truth.

She sat across from my hospital bed.

“I lied about one thing,” she said.

I waited.

“The night before your C-section, Mom told me you had changed your mind.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t believe her.”

My chest tightened.

Lauren continued.

“I knew something was wrong. I knew you would never give away one of your daughters without talking to me.”

“Then why didn’t you stop her?”

Tears slid down her face.

“Because for one night, I wanted the lie to be true more than I wanted to be a good person.”

There it was.

The sentence I had been waiting for.

No excuses.

No grief used as a shield.

Just guilt.

“I packed a diaper bag,” she said. “I put a car seat in my car. I made up a story in my head where you had secretly chosen me. I knew it didn’t make sense. I didn’t ask because I was afraid the answer would disappear.”

I looked at Rose sleeping against my chest.

“You were willing to build your motherhood on my silence.”

“Yes.”

“That’s not love, Lauren.”

“I know.”

“Not yet you don’t.”

She nodded.

“I’m pleading guilty.”

I looked up.

“To what?”

“Conspiracy and attempted custodial interference. My lawyer says I may avoid prison if I cooperate.”

“Is that why you’re telling me?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I spent three years saying I would do anything to be a mother. I finally did. And I became someone I don’t want any child to have as a mother.”

She stood.

“I’m sorry.”

I did not tell her it was okay.

It wasn’t.

But I said, “Tell the truth in court.”

“I will.”

As she reached the door, I asked one question.

“Was Mom planning to take Ava too?”

Lauren turned.

Her face went blank.

“I thought you knew.”

“Knew what?”

“She wasn’t.”

I waited.

Lauren whispered, “Marissa told Mom there was another buyer inside our family.”

Someone related to us had offered money for Ava.
