Chapter 12 - The Second Bracelet

Diane’s confession changed the case overnight.
She said Dr. Crest had called her at 9:17 the previous evening.
He told her the “family placement” was no longer possible unless she paid another sixty thousand dollars.
Diane refused.
Crest told her someone else would take the baby.
“So why did you still go through with it?” Detective Ortiz asked.
Diane sat behind glass at the county interview room.
“Because Marissa called me later and said Crest was bluffing.”
“You believed her?”
“I needed to.”
The same disease that had infected Lauren.
Needing a lie badly enough to treat it as truth.
Marissa, now in federal custody, refused to speak without a lawyer.
Patricia Shaw was still missing.
Dr. Crest had vanished.
Then the lab found something on the opened band Caleb had noticed.
A second infant’s DNA.
Not Rose’s.
Not Baby Morales’s.
A third baby.
I stared at Detective Ortiz.
“How?”
“The band appears to have been used before.”
“That’s impossible. It was issued this morning.”
“The electronic component was issued this morning. The plastic clasp was older.”
Someone had rebuilt the bracelet using parts from previous infant bands.
The hospital’s security system had a weakness: if the electronic tag remained active while the physical clasp was replaced, the system did not always register the seal as previously broken.
Patricia knew that.
The DNA belonged to a baby born at another hospital nine months earlier.
Her name was Sophie Bell.
Her mother, Jenna Bell, had spent nine months insisting the baby she took home did not look like the child she had held after delivery.
Everyone told her postpartum anxiety could distort perception.
A pediatrician finally ordered genetic testing two weeks earlier.
The baby Jenna was raising was not biologically hers.
Her case had already been reported to police.
Now the bracelet connected it to Patricia Shaw.
Jenna came to the hospital that evening.
She was twenty-eight, exhausted, and furious in the way only someone who had been dismissed too many times could be.
She looked at my three bassinets and began crying.
“I knew,” she said. “I knew the second day.”
I held her hand.
“What happened?”
“A nurse told me babies change after birth. My husband said I was exhausted. My mother said I should be grateful she was healthy.”
“And the baby you’ve been raising?”
Jenna cried harder.
“I love her. She’s my daughter in every way that matters. But somewhere, another woman may have my Sophie.”
The cruelty was impossible to measure.
This ring had not just stolen babies.
It had rearranged entire families.
Ortiz entered with a federal agent.
“We identified the other infant from Jenna’s case.”
Jenna stood so quickly her chair fell.
“Where is Sophie?”
The agent looked grim.
“We believe she was placed with a couple in Connecticut using fraudulent adoption documents.”
“Is she safe?”
“We think so.”
Jenna covered her mouth.
Then the agent turned to me.
“We also found one more match in the files recovered from New Path.”
He opened a folder.
Inside was a photograph of Patricia Shaw holding an infant security bracelet.
On the label were two words.
HART - AVA.
They had not planned to take only Rose.
