Chapter 6 - The Marriage Contract

Elena read the contract alone.
She made everyone wait outside the library except Rosa.
The first page was simple.
Daniel Whitmore would make Elena’s acquaintance after William Ashcroft’s death. He would not reveal his relationship with William unless a specific threat emerged. In exchange, William had paid off the last of the Whitmore family debts and placed money in a private account Daniel could not access until after the marriage.
The second page was worse.
Daniel had agreed to report any attempt by Victoria Whitmore to influence Elena’s estate.
The third page contained one sentence Elena read four times.
DANIEL WHITMORE IS TO PROTECT ELENA ASHCROFT FROM PROJECT MERCY AND FROM ANY PERSON SEEKING CONTROL OF THE ASHCROFT TRANSIT TRUST.
“What is Project Mercy?” Elena asked.
Rosa shook her head.
“Your mother used that phrase once.”
“When?”
“Before they sent her away.”
Elena opened the door.
Daniel was waiting.
She held up the contract.
“Explain.”
“I can explain what I know.”
“Start with why you took my father’s money.”
Daniel did not defend himself.
“My father died owing half of New York money. My mother was selling jewelry to keep our house. William offered to clear it if I agreed to watch over you.”
“You were nineteen.”
“Yes.”
“You waited years to meet me.”
“Yes.”
“And then you married me.”
“That wasn’t in the contract.”
Elena laughed bitterly. “How romantic.”
“I fell in love with you.”
“After you were paid to find me.”
“Yes.”
She hated that he did not hide from the truth.
“Did my father tell you about my mother?”
“No.”
“Project Mercy?”
“Only the name.”
Victoria appeared in the doorway.
“Your father loved turning people into pieces on a board.”
Elena looked at her. “And you love pretending you were never playing.”
Victoria’s eyes sharpened.
“I was playing before William knew there was a board.”
Rosa stepped forward. “Tell her.”
“Tell her what?”
“Why Clara hated you.”
For the first time, Victoria looked tired.
“Because I helped build the thing she wanted to destroy.”
Daniel frowned. “Project Mercy?”
Victoria nodded.
“It was not a charity.”
She walked to the window.
“Twenty-five years ago, the Ashcrofts and Whitmores controlled most of the rail lines moving steel between Pennsylvania and New York. We also controlled the contracts nobody was supposed to see.”
“Military?” Elena asked.
Victoria looked at her.
“Worse. Political.”
Rosa whispered, “The ledger.”
Victoria turned sharply.
Elena caught it.
“What ledger?”
No one answered.
Then a crash came from upstairs.
Daniel ran first.
They found Elena’s old traveling trunk open on the floor.
The nursery foundation papers had been scattered everywhere.
Someone had searched the room.
On the bed lay a single photograph.
Elena picked it up.
Her mother stood beside Victoria Whitmore, both women young and smiling.
Between them was William Ashcroft.
On the back, Clara had written:
WE BUILT MERCY TOGETHER.
Underneath, in different ink, someone had added:
Victoria finally explained why Project Mercy had been given such an innocent name. After every industrial disaster, the consortium created a relief fund for widows and children. Newspapers praised their generosity. Half the money went to families. The other half bought silence.
“Your mother objected to the dead children,” Victoria said.
Elena stared at her. “How inconvenient of her.”
Victoria accepted the insult. “Clara had a conscience at exactly the moment the rest of us had learned to live without one.”
Daniel asked, “And Father?”
“He wanted out before she did.”
“Then why did you teach me he was weak?”
Victoria’s eyes hardened. “Because I needed you to survive what weakness had cost him.”
Daniel looked away.
Elena suddenly saw the pattern more clearly. Victoria did not think of herself as cruel. She thought cruelty was preparation. She had trained Daniel to obey because she believed obedience kept men alive. She had tried to break Elena because she believed independent women got crushed. Her motive did not excuse anything. It made her more dangerous because she could hurt people while calling it love.
AND ONE OF US KILLED HER FOR IT.
