Chapter 20 - The Third Testament

Victoria survived.

That surprised everyone, including Victoria.

She woke three days later under guard at Mercer House with a bullet removed from her side and two federal agents outside her door.

Charles Vale was charged with attempted murder, conspiracy, bribery, and enough financial crimes to fill a newspaper page.

Dr. Mercer agreed to testify.

Samuel Pike did too.

Rosa refused to leave Elena’s room until someone physically brought her a chair.

Clara sat beside the window holding her granddaughter.

Daniel lay in the next room recovering from his gunshot wound.

Elena had not decided whether he would remain her husband.

For once, nobody demanded that she decide quickly.

The newspapers called it the Mercy Scandal.

They printed William Ashcroft’s crimes beside Victoria Whitmore’s.

Elena insisted on that.

Her father would not become innocent just because he was dead.

The Ashcroft Transit Trust transferred to Elena after the birth of her daughter, whom she named Hope Clara Ashcroft Whitmore.

Rosa cried for twenty straight minutes when she heard the name.

Then Samuel Pike arrived with another sealed envelope.

Elena stared at it.

“No.”

Pike almost smiled. “I understand.”

“If you say the words ‘your father instructed me,’ I will throw you out the window.”

“This one is from your mother.”

Clara looked confused.

“I did not write anything.”

Pike placed the envelope down.

“It was deposited in Switzerland in 1906.”

Clara went pale.

Daniel, who had walked in using a cane, stopped near the door.

Pike broke the seal.

Inside was not a will.

It was a third testament attached to the Ashcroft trust.

Elena read the first paragraph.

The document stated that if Mercy was exposed and Elena survived to inherit, control of certain European accounts would remain locked until Thomas Whitmore personally appeared or was legally proven dead.

Daniel whispered, “My father.”

Clara sat down.

Elena kept reading.

There was a handwritten note beneath the legal text.

Thomas,

If you are alive, come home and answer for what we did.

If you are dead, may our children be better than we were.

— Clara

Daniel looked at his mother’s room across the hall.

“She said he is alive.”

Clara nodded slowly.

“I believed he was.”

Elena stared at her.

“You knew?”

“Not where. Not what he became.”

A messenger arrived before anyone could say more.

“Telegram for Mr. Whitmore.”

Daniel took it.

No sender address.

The cable had come through Zurich.

His face changed as he read.

Elena stood despite Rosa’s protest.

“What does it say?”

Daniel handed her the paper.

VICTORIA FAILED.

THE CHILD LIVES.

GOOD.

KEEP HER THAT WAY.

I AM COMING HOME.

— THOMAS WHITMORE

The room went silent.

Daniel sat down hard.

For eighteen years, he had believed his father was dead.

For six months, Elena had believed the greatest threat to her family was her mother-in-law.

Both of them had been wrong.

Elena looked down at Hope sleeping against Clara’s chest.

The second will had saved her from one family war.

The third testament had just opened another.

And somewhere across the Atlantic, the man who had helped create Mercy was on his way back to New York.

Elena visited Victoria once before the federal agents transferred her to New York.

Victoria looked smaller in the clinic bed. Not harmless. Just human.

“Do you hate me?” Victoria asked.

“Yes.”

Victoria almost smiled. “Good. I would distrust anything softer.”

Elena sat beside the bed. “I also believe you loved Daniel.”

“That may be worse.”

“It was, when you used love as authority.”

Victoria looked toward the window. “You think you will do better with your daughter?”

“I think I will fail differently.”

That made Victoria laugh, then wince from the wound.

Elena stood. “Thomas is coming home. What does he want?”

Victoria’s expression changed.

“Not the company.”

“Then what?”

“The archive Clara never released.”

Elena froze. “There is more?”

Victoria met her eyes. “Mercy was only the domestic ledger. Thomas found Halcyon’s European book.”

Elena understood why Zurich mattered before the telegram ever arrived. The scandal they had exposed was not the whole machine. It was one country’s branch.

Victoria whispered, “If Thomas comes back willingly, he is not coming to apologize.”
