Chapter 16 - The House Under Siege

The first men came through the chapel doors.
Daniel fired from behind a stone column.
Rosa pulled Elena toward the underground passage.
Clara grabbed the trust deed and the remaining files.
Gunfire cracked through the chapel.
Elena’s baby kicked hard again.
Then pain tightened across her back.
She stopped.
Rosa looked at her.
“No.”
“I’m fine.”
“That was a contraction.”
“I am not having this child in a tunnel while men shoot at us.”
Rosa almost laughed. “Excellent. Tell the baby.”
They escaped through a drainage door and reached Ashcroft Manor before dawn.
The gates were already occupied.
Victoria stood on the front steps with six armed guards and a county sheriff.
She held a court order.
“Elena Ashcroft Whitmore is temporarily incompetent,” the sheriff announced. “The estate is under protective management.”
Daniel rode forward. “On whose petition?”
Victoria looked at him.
“Yours.”
Daniel went white.
The guardianship paper from Mercer House.
His signature.
One careless signature had become a weapon again.
Elena rode beside him.
“Sheriff, that order was signed while I was unconscious after an attempted murder.”
He avoided her eyes.
Victoria smiled.
“You may explain that to the judge.”
Clara whispered, “Judge Pike.”
Elena looked at her.
“Samuel’s brother?”
“Yes.”
The conspiracy had finally reached the courthouse.
Daniel handed Elena his reins.
“What are you doing?”
“Fixing one signature.”
He dismounted and walked toward the sheriff.
“I revoke my petition.”
Victoria laughed. “Too late.”
Daniel pulled the original copy from his coat and tore it in half.
The sheriff reached for him.
Daniel punched him.
Everything exploded.
Rosa drove Elena’s carriage through the side gate while Clara fired a pistol into the air to scatter horses.
Daniel jumped onto the rear step as they passed.
They entered the service courtyard.
Old Ashcroft workers came out with tools, hunting rifles, and farm guns.
Victoria’s hired men followed.
The manor became a battlefield.
Elena reached the library just as another contraction bent her in half.
Daniel caught her.
“Not now.”
She glared at him. “I am aware.”
Clara opened William’s old wall safe.
Inside was a telegraph key connected to a private line.
“The second will’s release mechanism,” she said.
Elena stared.
“If I trigger it?”
“The archive goes public.”
“Do it.”
Clara hesitated.
“Once it starts, it cannot be stopped.”
“Good.”
Before Clara could touch the key, Samuel Pike stepped out from behind the bookcase holding a gun.
Daniel raised his weapon.
Pike shook his head.
“I am not here for Halcyon.”
Elena stared at him.
“Then why did you give them the map?”
“To keep my daughter alive.”
He looked at Clara.
“And because you still do not understand what is inside that archive.”
Clara went pale.
Pike whispered:
Ashcroft workers did not defend the manor because Elena ordered them to. They came because Rosa had spent twenty years making sure wages were paid during bad winters, because Clara had funded widows quietly, and because Elena had once stopped a foreman from evicting three injured men from company housing.
Victoria watched stable hands and gardeners take positions at the service doors.
“You think they love you,” she said.
Elena shook her head. “No. I think they remember how they were treated.”
“That is more dangerous.”
“Good.”
A kitchen maid named Beth pressed a hunting rifle into Elena’s hands. “My brother died in the Newark fire.”
Elena remembered the entry in the ledger. Twenty-three dead.
“My father signed the payment afterward,” Elena said.
Beth looked at her. “Then make sure his name goes out with the rest.”
“I will.”
Beth nodded once and returned to the courtyard.
That exchange settled something in Elena. She no longer wanted to preserve the Ashcroft name. Names were how families hid systems. She wanted records, testimony, ownership rules, and consequences. The archive could destroy her inheritance socially even while securing it legally. She was finally ready to pay that price.
“If Elena releases it, her father’s crimes come out too.”
