Chapter 15 - Rosa’s Real Name

Rosa did not deny it.

Elena wished she had.

The old maid sat in the chapel room with both hands folded in her lap.

“My name was Rosalie Vane.”

Clara closed her eyes.

Daniel frowned. “Vane?”

Clara answered. “One of Halcyon’s founding families.”

Elena stared at the woman who had braided her hair, held her through fevers, taught her to read recipes, and just saved her from a ravine.

“You were one of them.”

“I was born one of them.”

“That is not the same answer.”

Rosa nodded.

“No. I worked for them until I was twenty-seven.”

“What did you do?”

“Carried documents. Bribed clerks. Moved cash. Listened at doors.”

Clara added quietly, “She was very good.”

Elena’s anger rose.

“Why did you come to our house?”

“To spy on your mother.”

Elena looked away.

Rosa’s voice broke.

“Then I loved her.”

Clara gave a sad smile.

“In her own alarming way.”

“And me?” Elena asked.

Rosa stood.

“You were never an assignment.”

“How do I know?”

“You don’t.”

That hurt because it was honest.

Clara opened a wall safe with Pike’s key.

Inside was not the ledger.

It was a deed.

THE ASHCROFT TRANSIT TRUST.

Elena read the controlling clause.

Ownership did not fully transfer to her until the birth of her first living child.

Before then, the trust remained under temporary trustees.

One trustee was William Ashcroft.

Dead.

One was Thomas Whitmore.

Supposedly dead.

And the third was Rosalie Vane.

Elena looked at Rosa.

“You control my company.”

“Temporarily.”

“You could have told me.”

“I was forbidden by the trust.”

“Everyone was forbidden to tell me everything.”

Daniel took the deed.

“What happens when the baby is born?”

Clara answered.

“Elena receives voting control of the transit trust. The sealed archive opens. Halcyon loses its hidden ownership in six major rail lines.”

Daniel understood first.

“That is why they want her dead before delivery.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

Elena stared.

Clara looked at her stomach.

“They need the baby born alive.”

Silence.

“Why?” Elena asked.

“Because if Elena dies after a live birth, guardianship can control the child’s shares until adulthood.”

Daniel went cold.

“Mother.”

Clara nodded.

“Victoria never wanted the baby dead.”

Elena remembered the carriage.

The broken bridge.

Victoria blocking the exit.

Daniel cutting the reins.

They had been trying to kill Elena while keeping the child alive long enough to inherit.

Then a church bell rang above them.

Three slow strikes.

Rosa’s face changed.

“That is a Halcyon warning.”

Clara blew out the lamp.

Rosa told Elena how she first betrayed Halcyon. Clara had asked her to deliver a payment to an inspector after a mill fire. Rosa went to the inspector’s house and found his daughter wrapping burns on his hands because he had tried to rescue workers before accepting the bribe.

“I realized none of us were clean,” Rosa said. “Not the bribed men. Not the families paying them. Not the people who took the money and later regretted it.”

“So you changed sides.”

“I changed people.”

Elena frowned.

“I stopped serving an organization and started serving Clara. Then I served you.”

“That is not the same as serving what is right.”

Rosa smiled sadly. “No. You are smarter than I was.”

Elena looked at the deed again. “Then help me build something that does not depend on one person’s loyalty.”

That was the first time Elena thought beyond survival. If the trust lived through her alone, Hope would inherit the same trap. The only victory worth having would be a structure that made secrecy harder, not merely a different family holding the keys.

“They found us.”
