Chapter 13 - Bridge 47

Bridge 47 had been abandoned for ten years.
The rail company called it an engineering failure.
The Mercy ledger called it something else.
CONTROLLED LOSS.
Daniel stood beneath the rusting structure and stared up at the black iron beams.
“My mother brought me here after Father’s funeral,” he said. “She told me this was what happened when men tried to fight bigger forces.”
Elena looked at him.
“She brought a child to a collapsed bridge to teach obedience.”
“Yes.”
“That explains more than I wanted it to.”
Rosa almost smiled.
They found the first clue inside an old signal box.
A brass key taped beneath the desk.
The second clue was a number carved into the wood.
47-THW.
Thomas Henry Whitmore.
Daniel’s hands shook as he unlocked a small maintenance safe.
Inside was no ledger.
Only a revolver, a train ticket to Montreal dated 1904, and a photograph of Clara standing beside Thomas.
On the back:
IF WILLIAM FINDS US, MERCY WINS.
Daniel sat down hard.
Elena picked up the ticket.
“Your father left with my mother.”
“Or planned to.”
Rosa searched the safe again.
Her fingers found a hidden panel.
Behind it was a map.
Red lines connected New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Washington.
Each line ended at a bank.
Pike leaned closer.
“These are Halcyon accounts.”
A sound came from above.
Metal scraping.
Daniel looked up.
“Move.”
The first beam fell where Elena had been standing.
They ran as bolts began exploding from the old supports.
Someone had rigged the bridge.
Again.
Daniel dragged Elena behind a stone pillar.
Rosa and Pike dove toward the embankment.
Three armed men appeared on the upper line.
One shouted, “Leave the map!”
Daniel fired once.
The men returned fire.
Elena pressed both hands over her stomach as the baby kicked hard.
“Daniel.”
“I know.”
He tore a loose signal cable from the wall and pulled.
A rusted warning bell dropped from its mount, crashing onto the track above and forcing the attackers back.
They escaped through a drainage tunnel.
Outside, Rosa counted heads.
“Elena. Daniel. Samuel.”
Then she stopped.
Pike was gone.
Daniel turned back toward the bridge.
A carriage waited on the opposite road.
Samuel Pike climbed inside willingly.
A man held the door open for him.
Elena could not see the man’s face.
But Pike handed him the map.
Daniel whispered, “He betrayed us.”
Elena watched the carriage pull away.
Then she noticed the crest painted on the door.
Not Whitmore.
Not Ashcroft.
A silver bird inside a black circle.
Inside the drainage tunnel, Elena nearly fell when another blast shook the bridge. Daniel caught her around the waist.
“Do not say I told you so,” she warned.
“I was going to say you are bleeding.”
She looked down. A scrape on her palm. Nothing more.
The baby moved. Elena pressed Daniel’s hand against the kick before she could think better of it.
His face changed.
“I don’t deserve that.”
“No,” she said. “But she did not ask about your moral record.”
He laughed once, broken and surprised.
Then Rosa called from ahead. “If the two of you reconcile in a sewer, I will personally annul the marriage.”
Even Elena laughed.
The moment mattered because danger had not erased ordinary feeling. They were still two people who had once chosen each other, even if that choice had been manipulated from the beginning.
“If my father is alive and he is part of Halcyon, I will not choose him over you,” Daniel said.
Elena looked at him. “Do not promise what you have not been tested on yet.”
The lesson of the bridge was that promises were easy before the knife was in your hand.
Halcyon.
