Chapter 9 - The Company I Owned Without Knowing It

Mitchell Family Holdings had been formed eleven months earlier.

According to the operating agreement, I was the majority owner.

According to me, I had never heard of it.

Zoe walked us through the records.

“Ryan used your name for three reasons. First, the trust relationship made lenders comfortable. Second, a woman-owned entity qualified for a municipal development incentive. Third, putting fifty-one percent in your name shifted certain personal guarantees toward you.”

I felt sick.

“So when it fails…”

“Creditors may come after you.”

Grandma swore under her breath.

I had never heard her do that before.

The company owned two unfinished townhome projects, a warehouse parcel, and a model home Ryan had once told me belonged to a client.

“Can we stop him from selling anything?” I asked.

Leah nodded. “We’re filing for an injunction.”

For the first time since arriving at Grandma’s house, I felt something other than panic.

I felt direction.

I opened a notebook.

“Tell me everything I need to know.”

Zoe blinked.

“You want the financials?”

“Yes.”

“They’re ugly.”

“So is my marriage.”

Grandma smiled despite herself.

For four hours, Zoe taught me to read the mess Ryan had hidden behind jargon.

Debt service.

Capital calls.

Related-party transfers.

I was not a financial expert.

But I was not stupid either.

That distinction mattered more every hour.

By midnight, I found a recurring payment Zoe had overlooked because it was small compared with the loans.

$1,850 every month.

Recipient: HAWTHORNE DIGITAL MONITORING.

I pointed at it.

“What is that?”

Zoe searched the vendor.

“Home-data collection. Cloud cameras. Audio archiving.”

My skin crawled.

The next morning, Leah compelled preservation of our baby-monitor account.

There were hundreds of archived clips.

Some showed Sophie sleeping.

Some showed me feeding her.

Some showed Ryan entering rooms after I left.

Then we found a clip labeled EPISODE 14.

I was sitting on the edge of the bed crying.

My voice said, “I can’t do this anymore.”

That sentence appeared in Ryan’s custody petition.

But the clip continued.

“I can’t do this marriage anymore, Ryan. I can’t ask permission to buy diapers.”

Ryan’s filing had cut the second sentence.

Leah froze the video.

In the corner of the frame, reflected in the mirror, my mother was standing outside the bedroom door.

She had been there while Ryan provoked me.

And she had let him use my breaking point as evidence against me.
