Chapter 13 - The One Thing Ryan Miscalculated

Grandma read the investigator’s report without speaking.
It described her routines.
Her pharmacy.
Her church.
Her monthly bridge club.
Her cardiologist.
Her lawyer.
Me.
For the first time since this began, Grandma looked old.
Not weak.
Violated.
“I let Linda handle too many papers after my surgery,” she said.
I sat beside her.
“That does not make this your fault.”
She gave me a sad smile.
“I know. I’m trying to believe that in both directions.”
I understood.
For days she had been telling me not to blame myself for Ryan’s choices.
Now she had to learn the same lesson.
Leah filed an emergency petition to block any conservatorship action and submitted an independent capacity evaluation Grandma had voluntarily completed that morning.
The physician found no cognitive impairment.
Ryan’s plan depended on getting ahead of us.
He had lost that advantage.
Then he made his mistake.
He called Mom.
She put the call on speaker while sitting in Leah’s office.
“You gave them the drive,” Ryan said.
Mom’s face crumpled.
“Yes.”
“You stupid, selfish woman.”
I watched Mom absorb the insult from the man she had protected against her own daughter.
Ryan continued.
“You think Emily will forgive you? She won’t. Evelyn won’t either. When this is over, you’ll have nothing.”
Mom looked at me.
For once, I did not reassure her.
“What do you want?” she asked Ryan.
“Fix it. Tell the court Emily pressured you. Tell them Evelyn threatened to cut you out unless you testified.”
“And if I don’t?”
A pause.
“I send everything.”
“What everything?”
“Every transfer you took. Every falsified form you signed. David’s medical payment. All of it.”
Mom’s voice steadied.
“You mean the crimes you asked me to help commit?”
Ryan went silent.
It was the first time I heard fear in him.
Mom looked at Leah.
Leah nodded once.
Mom said, “I’m not fixing anything for you again.”
She ended the call.
Twenty minutes later, Ryan’s attorney emailed a notice.
Ryan was withdrawing his settlement offer.
Attached by mistake was another document from his legal folder.
A draft airline itinerary.
Passenger one: Ryan Mitchell.
Passenger two: Sophie Mitchell.
Destination: Toronto.
Departure date: the morning after his requested emergency custody hearing.
