Chapter 3 - Six Weeks Before He Threw Me Out

I called my mother at 7:12 that evening.
Leah told me not to.
Grandma told me not to.
I did it anyway.
Linda answered on the second ring.
“Emily, thank God. Ryan said you disappeared with the baby.”
I almost laughed.
“You signed an affidavit saying I’m an unfit mother.”
Silence.
“Emily—”
“Yes or no?”
“It wasn’t supposed to be used like that.”
The sentence hurt worse than a denial.
“What was it supposed to be used for?”
“Protection.”
“From me?”
“From a situation getting out of control.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“You helped him empty my account.”
“I did not empty your account.”
“You authorized forty-two thousand dollars nine days ago.”
Another silence.
“That money was for the house.”
“The house he just threw me out of?”
Mom’s voice sharpened. “You don’t know everything Ryan has been dealing with.”
There it was.
His burden.
His stress.
His explanations.
My pain had always arrived in our family already carrying someone else’s excuse.
“What about Grandma’s money?” I asked.
“You mean the money she used to buy access to you?”
My breath caught.
“She sent it for me.”
“She sent it so you would always need her.”
“I didn’t even know it existed.”
“That was the point.”
I went still.
“What did you just say?”
Mom hung up.
Leah was watching me from across Grandma’s kitchen.
“She admitted the transfer?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
“It doesn’t feel good.”
“No,” Leah said quietly. “Evidence rarely does when it comes from someone you love.”
The next morning, Leah obtained the full custody filing through the court portal.
She placed a printed copy in front of me.
“Look at the date on the petition draft.”
I did.
Six weeks earlier.
My skin prickled.
Ryan had started preparing to take Sophie six weeks before he told me our marriage was over.
The filing included more photographs.
One showed me asleep in bed at 2:14 in the morning with Sophie nursing beside me.
I stared at it.
“That was taken in our bedroom.”
Leah leaned closer.
“By Ryan?”
“I don’t know.”
The angle was too high.
Not from the doorway.
Not from beside the bed.
From the corner near the ceiling.
I thought of the baby monitor Ryan had installed after Sophie came home from the hospital.
He had insisted on one with cloud storage.
“For emergencies,” he had said.
Leah looked at the photo again.
“Who had the password?”
“Ryan.”
I swallowed.
“And my mother.”
