Chapter 8 - Grandma’s Real Signature

Grandma did not deny the signature.

That scared me more than if she had.

She sat in her study with the document beneath a brass reading lamp.

“That is my handwriting.”

My throat tightened.

“So you did approve it?”

“No.”

“Grandma—”

“I signed a stack of estate documents before my hip surgery five years ago. Linda was helping me reorganize beneficiary paperwork.”

Leah looked up sharply.

“Blank signature pages?”

“Not blank. But some forms had attachments that were supposed to be completed later.”

Zoe requested the digital copy from the lender.

Metadata arrived the next morning.

The signature page had been scanned five years earlier.

The collateral language had been created later.

Much later.

Three months before my wedding.

On a laptop registered to Ryan Mitchell.

I sat at Grandma’s dining table staring at the report.

“He was preparing before we were married.”

Grandma’s face had gone pale with fury.

“But he needed Linda to get the signature page.”

I called Mom again.

This time, she answered without pretending everything was normal.

“What do you want?”

“Did you give Ryan one of Grandma’s signed estate pages?”

Her silence lasted six seconds.

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

“Why?”

“He told me he was preparing a marital financial plan.”

“And you believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

“That is not the same thing.”

Mom’s voice cracked.

“You have no idea what it was like growing up with her. Every birthday, every tuition payment, every emergency came with a lesson about how she knew better. She skipped me. She always skipped me. Then she started sending you money directly after you got married.”

“She was trying to make sure I had something independent.”

“Exactly.”

The word came out bitter.

“She trusted you with independence. She trusted me with administration.”

Suddenly, the scheme made emotional sense in the ugliest possible way.

Mom had not only wanted money.

She wanted to be the gatekeeper Grandma refused to make her.

“Did Ryan know that?” I asked.

Mom whispered, “He knew everything.”

A new email arrived from Zoe while we were still on the call.

MITCHELL FAMILY HOLDINGS LLC.

Manager: Ryan Mitchell.

I stared at the screen.

Ryan had not just borrowed in my name.

He had built a company around it.
