Chapter 14 - The Hearing He Had Prepared for a Year

The airline itinerary changed the custody case immediately.

Ryan claimed it had been a family vacation draft.

The judge did not believe him.

His passport was ordered surrendered pending further review, and all parenting time with Sophie became supervised.

I thought that would feel triumphant.

Instead, I sat in the courthouse bathroom and cried until Leah knocked softly on the stall door.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

I laughed despite myself.

“I wanted him to be better than this.”

“I know.”

“That feels stupid now.”

“No. Loving someone is not evidence that you were stupid. Continuing to hand them the knife after they use it is where the problem starts.”

I washed my face.

When I returned to the courtroom, Mom was on the witness stand.

She admitted opening the hidden account.

She admitted intercepting Grandma’s calls.

She admitted giving Ryan access to financial documents.

She admitted taking twenty-six thousand dollars.

Ryan’s lawyer tried to make her the mastermind.

“Isn’t it true, Mrs. Carter, that you resented your mother?”

“Yes.”

“And you wanted control over money she intended for Emily?”

“Yes.”

“And Mr. Mitchell simply followed your instructions?”

Mom looked at Ryan.

“No.”

His lawyer paused.

Mom continued.

“I started the first lie. Ryan built a system out of it.”

The sentence landed harder than any denial could have.

She described the early emails.

Then the monitoring.

Then the custody firm.

Then the conservatorship draft she said she had not known existed.

The judge ordered the financial evidence referred to the county prosecutor and fraud investigators.

Outside court, reporters had already gathered because one of Ryan’s development projects involved public funds.

He pushed through them without looking at me.

For the first time, I did not want him to.

That night, Zoe called with what she said was the final major account trace.

“Emily, the forty-eight monthly transfers are accounted for.”

“All of them?”

“Yes.”

“Then why do you sound like that?”

“Because I went back to the opening deposit.”

The hidden account had not started with Grandma’s first three-thousand-dollar transfer.

It had opened with ten thousand dollars in cash.

Deposited in person.

Using my identification.

On a day when Ryan was in Dallas and Mom was visiting my father in the hospital.

Neither of them could have made the deposit.

Someone else had been using my identity before the first dollar from Grandma ever arrived.
