Chapter 9 - The Safe House Betrayal

Marcus surrendered his devices.
Federal analysts found remote access software installed three months earlier.
The program entered through a hotel network.
The same hotel used for Daniel’s funeral guests.
Someone had compromised Marcus before Clara hired him.
The conspiracy anticipated investigation.
Daniel had prepared for anyone Clara might contact.
Amelia’s name appeared in Thomas’s records.
Marcus’s agency appeared in Valecrest’s risk assessment.
They knew Clara’s world before she realized she was at war.
Chloe’s transport vehicle was found outside Montreal.
Blood marked the rear seat.
A hospital wristband lay near the door.
Chloe remained missing.
Daniel contacted Julian from an encrypted number.
Julian was recovering under federal guard.
The call was monitored.
“You ruined everything,” Julian said.
Daniel laughed.
“You brought agents.”
“You shot me.”
“You were always replaceable.”
Julian’s voice changed.
“Where is Chloe?”
“With me.”
“Is she alive?”
“For now.”
“The baby?”
“Still profitable.”
Clara listened from the observation room.
Daniel continued.
“Evelyn built a beautiful plan.”
“One child.”
“Two trusts.”
“Three possible fathers.”
“Who is the biological father?”
“Bring me Clara’s trust authority.”
“No.”
“Then Chloe gives birth without a hospital.”
Julian closed his eyes.
Daniel ended the call.
Amelia looked toward Clara.
“He wants control documents.”
“He does not need them if the baby is Thomas’s.”
“Unless it isn’t.”
Clara understood.
If the child belonged to Daniel, he needed legal access another way.
If it belonged to Thomas, he needed Chloe as guardian.
If it belonged to an unknown donor, the entire plan failed.
Daniel no longer knew which lie remained useful.
That made him more dangerous.
Dr. Price’s clinic in Montreal appeared abandoned.
Federal teams entered through the front.
Clara remained inside a command vehicle.
A live camera showed empty treatment rooms.
Then agents found Lydia tied inside a storage closet.
She was dehydrated but alive.
Dr. Price was gone.
Daniel was gone.
Chloe was gone.
Lydia entered protective custody.
Clara sat across from her inside the hospital.
Her aunt could not meet her eyes.
“You knew Dad distrusted Julian.”
“Yes.”
“You still gave Evelyn his samples.”
“She said they were needed for estate verification.”
“You signed my embryo consent.”
“Julian showed me your approval.”
“You knew he was lying.”
Lydia began crying.
“I suspected.”
“Why did you help?”
“Thomas never trusted me to lead.”
“He left the trust to you.”
“I spent twenty years managing his mistakes.”
“You wanted his chair.”
“I wanted him to see me.”
“He was dead.”
“I know.”
The answer carried a lifetime of resentment.
Lydia had spent years beside Thomas.
Working.
Advising.
Watching him prepare Clara to inherit.
She allowed envy to become justification.
“Did you help Evelyn change his medication?”
“I gave Price authority to access Thomas’s chart.”
“Why?”
“Evelyn said Thomas had become paranoid.”
“She said he needed treatment before he destroyed the company.”
“Did Dad refuse?”
“Yes.”
“So you signed for him.”
“I was his medical proxy.”
“Only if he was incapacitated.”
“Price said he was.”
“Price lied.”
“I know.”
Clara looked at the woman who had attended every birthday.
Who held her at Thomas’s funeral.
Who later handed Evelyn the material used to create a child from his dead body.
“Will you testify?”
“Yes.”
“Against Evelyn?”
“Yes.”
“Julian?”
“Yes.”
“Yourself?”
Lydia hesitated.
Clara stood.
Her aunt whispered, “Yes.”
Clara stopped.
Lydia continued.
“I will plead guilty.”
“I will return the money.”
“The board seat never existed.”
“Julian promised it.”
“Evelyn laughed when I asked after Thomas died.”
Clara felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Lydia handed her a key.
“Daniel dropped this.”
It belonged to a private airfield.
Marcus traced the number.
A charter plane had filed a flight plan to Nova Scotia.
Passenger list:
Daniel Hayes.
Samuel Price.
Chloe Hayes.
One additional passenger.
Evelyn Mercer.
Clara frowned.
“Evelyn is in federal custody.”
Amelia called the detention center.
Evelyn remained inside her cell.
The passenger was using her identity.
Who looked enough like Evelyn to travel under her name?
Margaret.
Clara’s mother.
She had been moved from the hospital apartment that morning for a medical consultation.
The transport vehicle never arrived.
Margaret was gone.
Daniel had taken both pregnancies.
Chloe carrying the unknown donor child.
Margaret carrying Clara’s embryo.
He now controlled every possible heir.
The charter plane left before Canadian authorities stopped it.
The flight path turned east.
Then disappeared from civilian radar.
Andrew examined the map.
“My father owned a house on Prince Edward Island.”
Clara looked at him.
“You knew?”
“He purchased it for my mother.”
“Lydia controlled the title after she died.”
Lydia’s face changed.
“I sold it.”
“To whom?”
“Red Harbor Consulting.”
Chloe’s company.
Daniel owned the island house through the grieving widow he created.
They traveled overnight.
A storm covered the coast.
The house stood alone above black water.
No vehicles were visible.
No lights burned.
Marcus found fresh tire tracks near the rear entrance.
Inside, a dining table had been prepared.
Five places.
A cake rested in the center.
The icing carried a message.
WELCOME TO THE FAMILY, CLARA.
A monitor turned on.
Daniel appeared beside Chloe.
Margaret sat nearby.
Dr. Price stood behind them.
Daniel smiled.
“You finally arrived.”
Clara stepped toward the screen.
“Release them.”
“Which one?”
“What?”
“Which mother?”
“Which baby?”
“Which family?”
His smile deepened.
“You spent your life believing betrayal was one door opening.”
“It is an entire house.”
The camera shifted.
Julian appeared in the room with Daniel.
Clara stopped.
Julian had left federal custody.
He had been part of the escape.
His injured shoulder remained bandaged.
He looked toward the camera.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel placed a gun against his side.
Julian’s fear looked real.
Daniel continued.
“Bring the Bennett Trust seal to the lighthouse.”
“Come alone.”
“Otherwise, one pregnancy ends before sunrise.”
The monitor went black.
Clara looked toward the storm outside.
The lighthouse stood on a narrow cliff beyond the house.
Amelia touched her arm.
“You are not going alone.”
Clara looked at the cake.
The same kind she had carried to Chloe’s door.
A comforting gesture turned into a threat.
“No.”
“I’m not.”
She opened the cake box.
Beneath the cardboard base was a hidden map.
A red line led from the house to an underground tunnel.
Someone inside had left it.
Chloe.
Margaret.
Julian.
Or Dr. Price.

One of them was trying to help.
One of them might be setting a second trap.
