Chapter 10 - The Lighthouse

Clara carried the Bennett Trust seal inside her coat.

The original remained with Amelia.

The object she carried was a replica containing a transmitter.

Marcus entered the underground tunnel with a tactical team.

Andrew stayed beside Lydia at the command house.

Clara walked toward the lighthouse alone.

Rain struck her face.

The beam swept across the ocean.

A figure waited near the top platform.

Daniel.

He held Chloe beside him.

Her wrists were tied.

Her coat could not hide the pregnancy.

“Stop there,” Daniel called.

Clara stopped.

“Where is my mother?”

“Safe.”

“Julian?”

“Less safe.”

“Dr. Price?”

“Still useful.”

Chloe looked toward Clara.

Fear filled her eyes.

Daniel held out his hand.

“The seal.”

“Release Chloe first.”

“She is my wife.”

“She is your hostage.”

“She became unreliable.”

Chloe’s voice shook.

“You faked your death without telling me the full plan.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You agreed.”

“To disappear after the insurance paid.”

“Not to use Clara’s father.”

“Not to steal embryos.”

Daniel laughed.

“You accepted the money.”

“I was grieving a husband who was still alive.”

“You cried beautifully.”

Chloe flinched.

Clara understood.

Daniel had manipulated Chloe too.

That did not erase her choices.

It explained why she finally ran.

Clara held up the seal.

“What does this give you?”

“Authority.”

“No.”

“It gives access to a trust you cannot legally control.”

“Andrew can.”

“He refused.”

“People change when money becomes real.”

“You still do not understand my family.”

Daniel smiled.

“I understand every family.”

“They say love until ownership appears.”

He pulled Chloe closer to the cliff rail.

“Give me the seal.”

Clara placed it on the wet stone.

“Kick it.”

She obeyed.

The seal stopped near his shoe.

Daniel crouched.

Chloe drove her heel into his injured knee.

He shouted.

Clara ran.

Daniel struck Chloe.

She fell near the railing.

Clara reached her.

Daniel pulled a weapon.

A gunshot came from the lighthouse door.

Julian stood there.

His face was bruised.

His wounded arm shook.

Daniel turned.

“You escaped.”

Julian aimed.

“Step away from them.”

Daniel laughed.

“You cannot shoot me.”

“You built your entire life around following my plans.”

Julian’s face hardened.

“You destroyed my marriage.”

“You married Clara because I introduced you.”

“You stole from Thomas because I designed the accounts.”

“You touched Chloe because I allowed it.”

Julian looked toward Clara.

Every humiliation became public in one sentence.

Daniel continued.

“You were never the leader.”

“You were the attractive door.”

Clara saw Julian break.

Not from guilt.

From wounded pride.

He fired.

The bullet struck the lighthouse glass.

Daniel returned fire.

Julian fell behind the doorway.

Clara pulled Chloe toward the stairs.

Daniel grabbed Clara’s coat.

The replica seal rolled toward the cliff.

He lunged for it.

Marcus’s team entered from below.

Daniel saw them.

He grabbed Chloe again.

The transmitter had led agents directly to him.

“You tricked me.”

Clara looked at him.

“You taught me.”

Daniel pressed the gun against Chloe’s stomach.

Everyone stopped.

Chloe began crying.

“Daniel.”

“Be quiet.”

“That is your baby.”

“Possibly.”

The word changed her face.

Daniel no longer cared whose child she carried.

The baby had become only an asset.

Chloe looked toward Clara.

Then she moved.

She turned sharply, allowing the gun to slide away from her stomach.

Clara struck Daniel’s wrist.

Marcus tackled him.

The weapon fell over the cliff.

Agents restrained Daniel.

He fought until they pressed him against the stone.

Julian remained near the door.

Alive.

The first shot had grazed his side.

Clara knelt beside Chloe.

“Are you hurt?”

“I don’t know.”

“My stomach.”

Medical teams rushed upward.

Chloe was taken to the mainland hospital.

The baby’s heartbeat remained stable.

Daniel was arrested under his real identity.

His fingerprints ended the legal fiction of his death.

Insurance investigators seized every related asset.

Julian was returned to custody.

But Margaret and Dr. Price remained missing.

They were not inside the lighthouse.

They were not inside the house.

A boat had left the northern dock during the confrontation.

Marcus found blood near the pier.

A torn piece of Margaret’s coat floated beside it.

Clara stared toward the dark water.

Daniel laughed from the police vehicle.

“You chose Chloe.”

Clara turned.

“What?”

“You came to the lighthouse.”

“Your mother waited at the dock.”

“You cannot save every woman who betrayed you.”

Clara approached the vehicle.

“Where is she?”

Daniel smiled.

“Price took her.”

“Why?”

“Because he knows Evelyn will trade anything for the embryo.”

“Where?”

“He did not tell me.”

“You expect her to pay him?”

“No.”

Daniel leaned closer to the window.

“I expect her to kill him.”

Clara looked toward Amelia.

Dr. Price had become the last person capable of proving whose genetic material created Chloe’s child.

He also controlled Margaret’s stolen pregnancy.

Evelyn needed him silent.

The federal prison placed Evelyn under twenty-four-hour observation.

She received one visitor before the lockdown.

A chaplain named Father Michael.

No priest with that identity existed.

Security footage showed him leaving with a medical file.

Marcus enlarged the image.

The man was Dr. Price.

He had entered the prison before traveling to the island.

Evelyn had already negotiated with him.

They searched her cell.

A message had been written beneath the bed.

PRICE KNOWS TOO MUCH.

THE BOAT WILL NOT REACH SHORE.

The coast guard located the vessel at dawn.

It drifted seven miles offshore.

Dr. Price lay unconscious near the wheel.

Margaret was gone.

A blood trail led to the edge.

No body was found.

Clara refused to accept the obvious.

Her mother was nearly three months pregnant.

The water was freezing.

Survival seemed impossible.

Then Price woke inside the hospital.

His first words were not about Margaret.

He asked for immunity.

Clara entered the guarded room.

“Where is my mother?”

Price looked toward the officers.

“I want a written agreement.”

Clara moved closer.

“You forged my medical records.”

“You stole my embryos.”

“You helped kill my father.”

“You do not have negotiating power.”

He smiled weakly.

“I know where Margaret is.”

Clara’s heart stopped.

“She did not fall?”

“No.”

“A second boat met us.”

“Who took her?”

Price’s smile disappeared.

“Evelyn’s daughter.”

Clara stared.

“Julian is her only child.”

“No.”

Price shook his head.

“Julian is the only child she kept.”

A woman had taken Margaret.

A hidden daughter.

Another person raised outside the family.

Another heir created by Evelyn’s secrets.

Price whispered the name.

“Victoria Mercer.”

Amelia searched the records.

Victoria Mercer officially died at birth thirty-eight years earlier.

But a private adoption file connected the infant to another name.

Vanessa Price.

Dr. Samuel Price’s wife.

Evelyn’s hidden daughter had been married to the doctor who sabotaged Clara.

The conspiracy was not only business.

May you like

It was a family operation built across decades.

And Vanessa had just taken Clara’s mother and unborn child.
