Chapter 5 - Chloe’s Third Man

Clara agreed to meet Chloe inside a public botanical garden.

Amelia objected.

Marcus placed surveillance teams at every entrance.

Chloe arrived wearing a long coat and dark glasses.

She looked over her shoulder repeatedly.

Clara waited inside the greenhouse beside a wall of white orchids.

“You asked to speak.”

Chloe removed her glasses.

She had been crying.

“I did not know about Natalie.”

Clara’s expression remained still.

“You knew my embryos existed.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Julian planned to use them.”

“I thought he would ask you eventually.”

Clara almost laughed.

“You stood behind my husband while his mother told me another woman would give him a child.”

“I was terrified.”

“Of me?”

“Of Evelyn.”

Clara looked toward Chloe’s stomach.

“Whose baby?”

Chloe placed one hand over it.

“I don’t know.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the truth.”

Clara’s eyes narrowed.

Chloe continued.

“Daniel and I were trying before the crash.”

“I was also sleeping with Julian.”

“And someone else?”

Chloe closed her eyes.

“Dr. Price performed an insemination.”

“With whose material?”

“He told me it came from Daniel.”

“But?”

“I found paperwork in Evelyn’s study.”

“The donor number belonged to Thomas Bennett.”

Clara stopped breathing.

“My father?”

Chloe nodded through tears.

“No.”

“Thomas died three years ago.”

“He stored samples during cancer treatment.”

Clara remembered.

Her father had undergone chemotherapy seven years earlier.

He had preserved genetic material because doctors warned the treatment might make him infertile.

Her parents had briefly discussed another child.

They never used the samples.

“What would Evelyn gain?”

“If the child is Thomas’s biological son, he may qualify as a Bennett heir.”

Clara stared.

The Mercer trust required Julian’s legally recognized son.

The Bennett Trust could be challenged by Thomas’s biological son.

One child could unlock the Mercer fortune and take control of Clara’s inheritance.

Evelyn had designed a baby capable of inheriting both sides.

Clara felt sick.

“You agreed to carry my father’s child?”

“I did not know.”

“When did you discover it?”

“Two weeks ago.”

“Why did you remain?”

“Daniel said we could still escape after the trust transferred.”

“You believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

Clara moved closer.

“Where did Evelyn obtain the samples?”

“Lydia.”

Of course.

Her aunt controlled Thomas’s medical estate.

Lydia had handed Evelyn Clara’s embryos.

She had also handed over Thomas’s genetic material.

The betrayal crossed generations.

Clara’s father had tried to protect her.

His own sister was using his body to steal from his daughter after death.

“Does Julian know?”

“Not the full truth.”

“He believes the child is Daniel’s.”

“Why would Evelyn hide it?”

“She plans to reveal the paternity after the birth.”

“Then Julian can adopt the baby, activate the Mercer trust, and challenge my Bennett assets as the child’s guardian.”

Chloe nodded.

“Daniel believes he will take me and the baby to Europe.”

“Evelyn plans to remove Daniel.”

“What does that mean?”

Chloe’s face tightened.

“She says dead men should stay dead.”

Clara looked at her.

“Daniel is in danger.”

“He created this.”

“He helped fake his death.”

“He transported my embryos.”

“He watched Julian plan to erase me.”

“I know.”

Chloe’s voice broke.

“But he is still my husband.”

Clara understood the contradiction.

Love did not disappear simply because the person deserved consequences.

That did not make love a defense.

“What do you want from me?”

“Protection.”

“For you?”

“For the baby.”

“And Daniel?”

Chloe looked away.

“If possible.”

Clara laughed without humor.

“You want me to protect the three people who built this plan around my body.”

“I can testify.”

“Against Evelyn?”

“Yes.”

“Julian?”

Chloe hesitated.

Clara saw it.

“You still love him.”

“I don’t know what I feel.”

“You know enough to keep choosing him.”

Chloe covered her face.

Clara waited.

Then she spoke quietly.

“I will protect the child.”

“I will help you obtain legal protection if you tell the truth under oath.”

“All of it.”

Chloe lowered her hands.

“Daniel will kill me.”

“Daniel is legally dead.”

“He still has men.”

“So does Evelyn.”

“So does Julian.”

Clara stepped closer.

“You kept waiting for the safest criminal.”

“There isn’t one.”

Chloe looked toward the greenhouse entrance.

A man stood beyond the glass.

Daniel.

He had followed her.

His face carried open rage.

Chloe whispered, “Run.”

Daniel entered.

Visitors turned toward him.

They did not recognize a dead man.

Daniel grabbed Chloe’s arm.

“You called her.”

Clara moved between them.

“Let go.”

He looked at her.

“This does not concern you.”

“The baby may be my brother.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Chloe closed her eyes.

“You told her.”

Daniel tightened his grip.

“You stupid woman.”

Marcus appeared beside the fountain.

“Remove your hand.”

Daniel looked toward him.

Marcus displayed a federal credential.

“You are trespassing on a protected witness meeting.”

Daniel released Chloe.

Then he ran.

Marcus followed.

Daniel pushed through visitors and reached the service exit.

A motorcycle waited outside.

He escaped before agents closed the street.

But cameras captured his face clearly.

Daniel Hayes had returned from the dead in front of forty witnesses.

His legal death began collapsing.

Chloe entered emergency protection.

She surrendered her phone.

Messages showed Evelyn directing the pregnancy appointments.

Julian discussing Clara’s incapacity petition.

Daniel arranging laboratory transfers.

Lydia negotiating her board seat.

Dr. Price confirming donor numbers.

The conspiracy no longer depended on one recording.

It existed in thousands of written words.

At the emergency hearing, Chloe entered through a private door.

Julian’s attorney stared.

Evelyn’s face became white.

Lydia looked furious.

Clara sat beside Amelia.

Natalie waited behind them.

The judge reviewed the evidence in silence.

Dr. Price’s attorneys requested delay.

The judge refused.

Then Chloe took the stand.

She described the fake death.

The insurance payment.

The fertility fraud.

The planned paternity claim.

The hidden embryos.

The donor substitution.

Evelyn’s attorney stood.

“This witness has admitted to adultery and insurance fraud.”

“Why should the court believe her?”

Chloe looked toward Clara.

“Because she has every reason to hate me.”

“And she is still the first person who offered to protect my child.”

The courtroom became quiet.

The judge froze all Mercer and Bennett trust transfers.

He removed Lydia as temporary trustee.

He ordered independent custody of every stored embryo.

He placed Natalie under medical and legal protection.

He issued arrest warrants for Daniel and Dr. Price.

Julian remained free pending investigation.

Evelyn remained free.

They smiled as they left.

Too calm.

Marcus received the reason minutes later.

The private laboratory had been set on fire.

The embryo storage system failed.

Ten containers were destroyed.

Two were missing.

Clara’s records showed twelve embryos.

Natalie carried one.

That left one unaccounted for.

Someone had removed it before the fire.

Amelia looked toward Clara.

“Evelyn has a second surrogate.”

“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

Clara’s phone rang.

Her aunt Lydia was calling from an unknown number.

Clara answered.

Lydia sounded breathless.

“I made a mistake.”

“You made several.”

“Evelyn has the final embryo.”

“Where?”

“She transferred it months ago.”

“To whom?”

Lydia began crying.

“Clara, promise you won’t hate her.”

“Hate whom?”

A pause.

May you like

Then Lydia whispered the name.

“Your mother.”
