Chapter 7 - The Exchange

Daniel chose an abandoned medical complex outside Milwaukee.

He demanded Julian arrive alone.

He demanded proof that the final embryo remained viable.

They created a fake transport container.

Federal agents installed a tracker and audio device.

Julian wore a concealed microphone.

Before the operation, Amelia recorded his statement.

He admitted Daniel’s death was staged.

He admitted insurance money was collected.

He admitted Clara’s signature was forged on embryo-storage documents.

He admitted Evelyn planned the paternity claim.

He refused to admit knowing about Thomas’s death.

Clara watched through the glass.

Julian looked directly at her.

“I did love you.”

She turned off the recorder.

“You loved what loving me gave you.”

“That is not the same.”

He looked wounded.

Clara almost hated that some part of her still recognized the expressions that once made her comfort him.

Betrayal did not erase memory.

It contaminated it.

Julian drove to the medical complex.

Federal teams remained outside the industrial district.

Clara monitored the wire beside Marcus and Amelia.

Daniel’s voice entered the headphones.

“You brought it?”

“Yes.”

“Open the container.”

Julian released the locks.

Daniel examined the temperature display.

“Where is Evelyn?”

“Under investigation.”

“Chloe?”

“Protected custody.”

Daniel laughed.

“She always did prefer whoever promised safety last.”

Julian’s voice hardened.

“She testified.”

“Because Clara offered her something.”

“Clara will abandon her once the hearing ends.”

Clara listened without reacting.

Daniel continued.

“Did you know the baby is Thomas Bennett’s?”

“Yes.”

“Your mother created a perfect heir.”

“My mother created a disaster.”

“A profitable disaster.”

“Where is Price?”

“Close.”

“Bring him out.”

Daniel whistled.

Footsteps sounded.

Dr. Samuel Price entered.

His voice trembled.

“You said I could leave.”

Daniel answered, “After Julian confirms the embryo.”

Julian looked around.

“Where are the donor files?”

“Safe.”

“What happened to Thomas?”

Silence.

Clara leaned closer to the monitor.

Daniel laughed softly.

“You told him?”

“I told Clara Price treated Thomas.”

Dr. Price began breathing faster.

“I treated hundreds of patients.”

Julian moved closer.

“You altered Clara’s medication.”

“You falsified the reports.”

“You handled Thomas’s preserved samples.”

“What did Evelyn ask you to do to him?”

Price answered too quickly.

“Nothing.”

Daniel’s voice became amused.

“Tell him.”

Price whispered, “Evelyn requested a cardiac medication change.”

Clara stopped breathing.

“She said Thomas was experiencing dangerous arrhythmias.”

“He was not.”

“No.”

“What did the change do?”

“It increased the risk of cardiac arrest.”

Julian’s voice became quiet.

“You killed him.”

“I followed instructions.”

Daniel laughed.

“Doctors always say that.”

Clara removed the headphones.

For one second, the room tilted.

Her father had not simply died while investigating Julian.

Evelyn had used the same doctor who later sabotaged Clara’s fertility.

Thomas discovered the first crime.

They killed him before creating the second.

Clara put the headphones back on.

Julian asked, “Did my mother know it would kill him?”

Price remained silent.

Daniel answered.

“She chose the dosage.”

Clara closed her eyes.

Marcus signaled the federal teams.

They moved.

Inside the building, Daniel noticed something.

“What is that sound?”

Julian turned.

A helicopter passed overhead.

Daniel raised a gun.

“You brought them.”

“No.”

Daniel fired at the transport container.

The device exploded into coolant vapor.

Julian tackled him.

Price ran.

Agents entered through the west doors.

Gunfire struck the ceiling.

Clara watched the live camera shake.

Daniel broke free.

He grabbed Price and moved toward a service tunnel.

Julian followed.

Marcus shouted into the radio.

“Seal the south exit.”

The tunnel led to an underground ambulance bay.

Daniel pushed Price into a waiting van.

Julian reached the door.

Daniel aimed at him.

“You were always weak.”

Julian stopped.

Daniel continued.

“You needed Clara’s money.”

“Chloe’s devotion.”

“Your mother’s plans.”

“You never built anything.”

Julian looked toward the van.

“Neither did you.”

“You died to steal your own company.”

Daniel fired.

The bullet struck Julian’s shoulder.

He fell.

The van sped away.

Federal vehicles pursued.

Price remained Daniel’s hostage.

Agents treated Julian.

Clara watched from the command vehicle.

Julian looked toward her through the open ambulance doors.

For a moment, he looked like her husband again.

Injured.

Afraid.

Waiting for her to approach.

Clara remained where she was.

Marcus found the tracker beneath the ambulance bay.

Daniel had removed it from the container.

The van disappeared.

The operation captured Julian’s confession and Price’s admission.

It did not capture Daniel.

But Price had said enough.

Federal prosecutors arrested Evelyn before midnight.

She was taken from Chloe’s house in handcuffs.

Reporters surrounded the driveway.

Evelyn kept her chin high.

When she saw Clara standing beyond the barrier, her expression changed.

“You did this.”

Clara answered calmly.

“No.”

“You did.”

Evelyn leaned toward the agents.

“Thomas threatened our family.”

“He wanted to destroy Julian.”

“He discovered Julian was stealing from him.”

“He planned to expose us.”

“So you murdered him.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“I protected my son.”

Cameras captured every word.

Agents moved her toward the vehicle.

Evelyn shouted back.

“You think Thomas was innocent?”

Clara remained still.

“He had another family.”

“He planned to leave the Bennett Trust to a son you never knew existed.”

Clara’s stomach tightened.

Chloe’s baby had been created using Thomas’s genetic material.

But Evelyn was suggesting another child.

A living son.

A person her father may have recognized before his death.

Evelyn smiled from behind the car door.

“Ask Lydia who inherited the house in Vermont.”

The door closed.

Amelia looked toward Clara.

“Do you know anything about Vermont?”

“No.”

Margaret did.

When Clara called, her mother began crying.

“His name is Andrew.”

Clara closed her eyes.

Her father had another son.

Thirty-two years old.

Two years younger than Clara.

Margaret had known.

Lydia had managed the property.

Thomas had supported him secretly.

“Did Dad have an affair?”

Margaret’s voice broke.

“Yes.”

The word landed differently after Julian.

Another marriage.

Another hidden child.

Another family built behind a woman’s back.

Clara looked toward the dark road.

Her father had tried to protect her from Julian.

He had also betrayed her mother.

The dead hero at the center of her revenge was becoming a stranger.

And the hidden son might hold legal power over the Bennett Trust.
