Chapter 4 - The Children They Stole

Clara did not sleep.

She sat beside the window in Amelia’s guest room, reading fertility records until sunrise.

Three retrieval cycles.

Twenty-two eggs.

Twelve embryos.

Eight listed as nonviable.

Four listed as discarded.

None had actually been destroyed.

All twelve had been transferred to a private laboratory owned through Red Harbor Consulting.

Chloe’s company.

Dr. Price had falsified Clara’s medical chart.

Julian had signed storage authorizations using Clara’s electronic signature.

Evelyn had paid the fees.

Daniel had transported the embryos.

The conspiracy reached into Clara’s body.

She could not separate the financial crime from the physical violation.

Amelia placed coffee beside her.

“You need rest.”

“I need a court order.”

“We are filing this morning.”

“To seize the embryos?”

“To prevent transfer, destruction, or implantation.”

Clara looked up.

“Implantation?”

“If Chloe’s current pregnancy is Daniel’s, they may use another surrogate.”

“Who?”

“We do not know.”

Clara opened Dr. Price’s payment records.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Natalie Brooks.

Chloe’s younger cousin.

Twenty-seven.

Recently moved to Arizona.

No public employment.

Monthly payments from Red Harbor.

Marcus located her in a private apartment near Valecrest’s clinic.

She was not in Arizona.

She was six weeks pregnant.

Clara stared at the surveillance photograph.

“Is it mine?”

“We need medical records,” Amelia said.

“If they transferred one of my embryos—”

“We will find out.”

“They already did.”

Clara could feel it.

The timing.

The payments.

The secrecy.

Chloe’s child was Daniel’s.

Natalie might be carrying Clara and Julian’s biological child.

A baby created inside a marriage built on fraud.

A child being hidden so strangers could control an inheritance.

Clara stood.

“I want to speak to Natalie.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Direct contact may alert them.”

“She may not know.”

“She may be involved.”

“Then I need to see her face when I ask.”

Amelia considered the risks.

They arranged a meeting through a fake fertility-support group.

Natalie arrived at a quiet community center the following afternoon.

She wore an oversized sweater.

Her eyes looked tired.

Clara sat at the end of the table.

Three other women discussed surrogacy contracts.

Natalie remained silent.

After the session, Clara approached.

“Do you know Dr. Samuel Price?”

Natalie froze.

“I should go.”

“My name is Clara Mercer.”

The blood left Natalie’s face.

Clara continued.

“I believe you are carrying my embryo.”

Natalie’s hands began shaking.

“That’s not possible.”

“Then why are you being paid by Chloe Hayes?”

Natalie backed toward the door.

“She said the embryo belonged to her.”

“Chloe told you she was the biological mother?”

“Yes.”

“And Julian?”

“She said Julian was the father.”

Clara’s stomach turned.

“They told you they were married?”

“Separated.”

“Did you sign a contract?”

Natalie nodded.

“Who prepared it?”

“Evelyn Mercer’s lawyer.”

Clara held out her hand.

“I need a copy.”

Natalie looked frightened.

“They said you were dangerous.”

“What did they say?”

“That you attacked Chloe after learning she was pregnant.”

“That you had several breakdowns.”

“That the embryos had been donated after your treatment failed.”

Clara swallowed her anger.

“I never donated anything.”

Natalie covered her mouth.

“Oh God.”

“How many embryos were transferred?”

“One.”

“When?”

“Six weeks ago.”

Clara closed her eyes.

A heartbeat might already exist.

Her biological child was growing inside a frightened woman who had been lied to.

Natalie began crying.

“I needed the money.”

“My mother has cancer.”

“I thought I was helping a family.”

Clara softened.

“You are not the person I am fighting.”

Natalie looked at her.

“What happens now?”

“We protect you.”

“And the baby?”

Clara could barely form the words.

“We protect the baby too.”

Natalie gave Amelia the contract.

It granted legal parentage to Julian and Chloe.

Clara’s name did not appear.

The contract described the embryo as donated genetic material.

A witness signature appeared beneath Clara’s supposed consent.

Lydia Bennett.

Clara’s aunt.

Her father’s younger sister.

Lydia had managed the Bennett Trust after Thomas died.

Clara had trusted her completely.

She called Lydia.

Her aunt answered warmly.

“Clara.”

“Did you sign a consent form allowing Julian to use my embryos?”

Silence.

Clara closed her eyes.

“Answer me.”

“Julian said you had agreed.”

“He said the treatments were too painful for you.”

“You signed without calling me?”

“He showed me your electronic approval.”

“You know my father created protections because he did not trust Julian.”

“Thomas became paranoid.”

“He was right.”

Lydia’s voice changed.

“You need to be careful.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Julian can remove you from the trust if you create public scandal.”

“No.”

“The trust belongs to me.”

“You are a beneficiary.”

“I am the managing trustee.”

Clara stopped.

Her aunt continued.

“Your father gave me discretion if your behavior endangered the assets.”

“Julian has provided medical evidence.”

Clara understood.

Lydia was not merely fooled.

She had chosen a side.

“How much did he offer you?”

“Do not insult me.”

“How much?”

Lydia whispered, “A board seat.”

Clara laughed.

“You sold my child for a chair.”

“I believed the arrangement protected the family.”

“Which family?”

The call ended.

Amelia looked toward Clara.

“Lydia may attempt to suspend your authority today.”

“Can she?”

“Temporarily.”

“Then file against her.”

“On what basis?”

Clara placed Natalie’s contract on the table.

“Trafficking stolen genetic material.”

By evening, three emergency petitions entered different courts.

Clara sought protection for her embryos and Natalie’s pregnancy.

Lydia sought to suspend Clara from the Bennett Trust.

Julian sought a restraining order claiming Clara had threatened Chloe.

Evelyn filed an affidavit describing Clara as obsessed, jealous, and incapable of accepting infertility.

They attacked first.

News vans appeared outside Amelia’s office.

A headline spread online.

WEALTHY HEIRESS TARGETS PREGNANT WIDOW AFTER HUSBAND OFFERS SUPPORT.

Daniel remained legally dead.

The public believed Julian had gone to comfort his best friend’s widow.

Chloe appeared outside her home in a pale maternity dress.

She held Julian’s hand.

“I never intended to hurt Clara,” she said.

“Julian has been supporting me through grief.”

“My pregnancy was conceived before Daniel’s death.”

“That child is my husband’s.”

Every sentence was technically true.

Then Chloe began crying.

“Clara has become fixated on the idea that my baby belongs to Julian.”

“We are frightened.”

Julian placed one arm around her.

He looked directly into the cameras.

“I love my wife.”

“I hope she accepts help before someone is hurt.”

Clara watched from Amelia’s office.

“They are using the affair they staged to hide the crimes they committed.”

Amelia muted the television.

“The emergency hearing is tomorrow.”

“Natalie will testify?”

“She is afraid.”

“She should be.”

Marcus entered carrying a sealed envelope.

“We recovered footage from the private laboratory.”

A video showed Daniel delivering Clara’s embryos.

Dr. Price signed the transfer.

Julian watched.

Then another person entered.

Lydia.

Clara’s aunt personally inspected the storage case.

The court hearing would no longer depend on a forged signature.

Lydia had participated directly.

Marcus placed a second photograph down.

It showed Evelyn meeting a hospital administrator.

“What is this?”

“The administrator controls neonatal records.”

“Why does that matter?”

“Because Chloe’s medical chart was altered yesterday.”

Clara frowned.

Marcus continued.

“Her due date moved forward by six weeks.”

“Why?”

“To make the child appear conceived after Daniel’s legal death.”

Clara understood.

If Daniel remained dead and the baby appeared conceived afterward, Julian could claim paternity without admitting the earlier affair.

But Chloe had told reporters Daniel was the father.

The family’s stories were beginning to conflict.

Clara looked toward the screen.

“They are rushing.”

“Because the hearing may expose Daniel,” Amelia said.

Clara’s phone vibrated.

A message came from Chloe.

I need to speak to you alone.

Julian cannot know.

Clara stared.

A second message appeared.

The baby is not Daniel’s.

May you like

It is not Julian’s either.

And Evelyn will kill me if I tell you whose it is.
