Chapter 2 - The Door That Used My Name

The steel door opened into a narrow concrete passage.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“I had no idea that was there.”

Sophie looked at her. “Yes, you did.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

I took out my phone and called Malcolm, the head of estate security.

“No one enters or leaves the property,” I said. “Lock every gate. Pull every access log for the last six months.”

“Mr. Carter, is there a threat?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“I just don’t know which one yet.”

The passage ended behind a small service building near the north wall of the property. Someone could enter from the road without crossing a camera-covered driveway.

That explained how Olivia could have visited.

It did not explain why my thumb opened the door.

Back inside, Malcolm brought me the security records.

“There’s a problem,” he said.

“What?”

He placed a tablet on the kitchen island.

The hidden door appeared in the system as SERVICE ACCESS 4.

It had been opened seventeen times in the last four months.

Every entry was registered under my biometric profile.

I laughed once.

“That’s not possible. Half these dates I was out of the state.”

“I know.”

Vanessa crossed her arms. “Someone cloned his access.”

Malcolm looked at her. “That system can’t be cloned from a photograph or a fingerprint lifted from glass. It requires a live scan unless someone has administrator credentials.”

“Who has those?” I asked.

Malcolm hesitated.

“Three people. Me. You. And Mr. Lucas Carter.”

My younger brother.

The man running Carter Development while I was traveling.

The man who had introduced me to Vanessa.

I called Lucas.

Straight to voicemail.

I tried again.

Nothing.

Sophie climbed onto a stool beside me.

“Daddy?”

“Yeah, bug?”

“Mommy said Uncle Lucas is scared of you.”

I felt Vanessa watching us.

“When did she say that?”

“Last time she came.”

“What else did Mommy say?”

Sophie looked at Vanessa and went quiet.

I lowered my voice.

“You can tell me.”

“She said if the blue light ever came on, I had to hide.”

“What blue light?”

Sophie pointed toward the security panel near the hallway.

There was no blue light on it.

Malcolm walked over and removed the faceplate.

Behind it, someone had installed a second indicator.

A tiny blue LED.

His face changed.

“That isn’t ours.”

“What does it do?”

He followed two thin wires into the wall.

Five minutes later, he came back holding a black transmitter no bigger than a matchbox.

“It broadcasts when the interior cameras are disabled.”

I looked at Vanessa.

Her mouth opened.

I raised a hand.

“Don’t.”

Malcolm checked the device ID against the network logs.

Then he went very still.

“What?” I asked.

He turned the tablet toward me.

The transmitter had sent its last signal that morning.

At 9:14 a.m.

Two minutes later, the hidden door opened using my identity.

I had been in New York.

Vanessa had been at the house.

And according to the interior camera log, every camera went dark for exactly twenty-three minutes.

Except one.

A nursery camera Sophie had hidden behind a stack of books.

Malcolm opened the recording.

A woman walked into Sophie’s room.

Long dark hair.

Gray coat.

Olivia.

My dead wife.

Then Vanessa entered behind her.

And closed the door.

I paused the nursery footage and zoomed in.

Olivia had something in her hand.

A blue folder.

Vanessa tried to block the screen with her body.

“Move.”

“Ethan, you don’t know what’s in that file.”

“That’s becoming a theme.”

Malcolm enhanced the frame enough to read one word printed on the folder tab.

CUSTODY.

Sophie whispered, “Mommy told Vanessa she was stealing me.”

Vanessa spun toward her. “That is not what she said.”

Sophie recoiled.

I stepped between them.

“Say one more thing to her and you’ll leave this house in handcuffs.”

Vanessa stared at me, then lowered her voice.

“Fine. But when you find the custody file, read the first page before you decide who was stealing Sophie.”

“What’s on the first page?”

Her answer was barely audible.

“Your name.”
