Chapter 19 - The Family Vote

DNA testing gave us one answer and created three worse questions.

Sophie was my biological daughter.

Olivia had carried and delivered her.

But Claire Bennett’s genetic profile matched Sophie as her biological mother.

The clinic had used Claire’s egg.

That part was real.

What was not real was the reason.

Claire had never been an anonymous donor.

She had been my father’s employee and, according to old emails Olivia recovered, his most trusted financial aide.

Three months before the embryo transfer, Claire discovered Lucas’s first hidden account.

My father paid her to stay quiet.

Then he used her egg donation to create a legal connection between Claire and Sophie.

“Why?” I asked.

Mason slid a trust document across the table.

Because Claire had inherited eighteen percent of Carter Development from her own father, one of the company’s original founders.

She transferred those shares into a trust for any biological child created from her donated eggs.

My father knew.

He selected Claire as our donor without telling us because it allowed him to consolidate voting control in his future grandchild.

Olivia stared at the document.

“He turned our infertility into a corporate transaction.”

I had no answer.

The next morning, the board reconvened.

Lucas arrived with two attorneys.

My mother came alone.

Vanessa and Bell were in custody.

Federal investigators were already reviewing the ledger and Harbor Point files.

Lucas still tried to take control.

“You’re under investigation,” he told me across the table. “You cannot remain chairman.”

“So are you.”

“But I have the votes.”

He smiled.

Then Olivia entered with Sophie’s court-appointed guardian ad litem and our attorney.

My lawyer placed the second trust on the table.

Lucas stopped smiling.

The combined trusts held forty-nine percent.

My personal shares brought our side above fifty.

Lucas looked at my mother.

“Do something.”

Eleanor stared at him.

“No.”

“Mom.”

“No more.”

Her voice shook, but she did not look away.

“I spent years protecting this family from scandal. All I did was teach you that consequences were negotiable.”

Lucas’s face hardened.

“You signed the same documents.”

“I did.”

“And you’ll go down with me.”

“Yes.”

That silenced him.

The board voted Lucas out.

For the first time in months, I felt something close to relief.

Then Mason entered the room holding a sealed evidence bag.

He looked worried.

“What now?” I asked.

“This was found in Bell’s car.”

Inside was a small external drive labeled C.B.

Claire Bennett.

Olivia and I looked at each other.

We opened it in the conference room.

There was one video.

Claire appeared on screen, younger, terrified.

“If you’re watching this, Robert Carter is probably dead.”

My father.

Claire took a breath.

“He believes Sophie will save the company. He’s wrong.”

She held up a document.

“The trust was never created to protect Carter Development.”

The camera moved closer.

“It was created so Sophie could destroy it.”

The board vote ended Lucas’s control, but federal agents warned me not to celebrate.

One investigator pulled me aside.

“Your father’s structure is bigger than the company.”

“How much bigger?”

“We found political donations, hospital ownership, private security contracts.”

“Harbor Ridge?”

“Among others.”

Then he asked if the name Emma Bennett meant anything to me.

I said no.

He looked surprised.

“Bell searched that name nineteen times in the month before Olivia’s crash.”

I felt cold.

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

He handed me a printout of Bell’s search history.

The final query was different:

EMMA BENNETT — CURRENT GUARDIAN.

Someone had been tracking Claire’s other child before Olivia disappeared.

Whatever Emma was connected to, it was not a new mystery created by the envelope.

It had been part of the original plan.
