Chapter 18 - The Real Beneficiary

Nobody spoke.

Olivia looked at Vanessa as if she had started speaking another language.

“What do you mean, not Olivia?”

Vanessa wiped blood from the corner of her mouth.

“Ask Ethan.”

“I don’t know what she’s talking about.”

Bell laughed again.

“That’s the best part. He really doesn’t.”

I grabbed his shirt.

“Talk.”

Before he could, sirens sounded outside.

Mason had triggered an emergency beacon before we entered.

Bell’s confidence vanished.

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

“If police take me, Lucas will tell one version. Eleanor will tell another. You’ll spend years trying to understand why Sophie owns almost half the company.”

“Then tell us now.”

She looked at Olivia.

“Sophie’s biological mother signed the second trust.”

The room went silent.

Olivia’s face emptied.

I stepped back.

“No.”

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.”

Olivia held Sophie tighter.

“I gave birth to her.”

“I know.”

“Then what are you saying?”

“That you carried her. You raised her. You are her mother in every way that matters.”

Olivia’s voice sharpened.

“Stop.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Ethan, remember the fertility treatment?”

I did.

Olivia and I had spent two years trying to have a child.

There had been an embryo transfer.

A donor program.

We were told the egg came from an anonymous donor.

My stomach dropped.

“Who was the donor?”

Vanessa stared at me.

“Your father arranged it.”

Olivia shook her head.

“No. No, he couldn’t.”

The police reached the top of the stairs.

Mason called out that Bell was armed and down.

Officers flooded the room.

Vanessa was handcuffed.

Bell was pulled away.

But I barely saw any of it.

I was watching Sophie.

She looked exactly like Olivia when she smiled.

At least I had always believed she did.

Back at my attorney’s office, we searched the documents seized from the beach house.

One encrypted drive contained fertility clinic records.

The donor file had been altered.

But the original billing code remained.

Mason traced it.

The donor was not anonymous.

She was twenty-three at the time.

She had signed an NDA and received a large payment from my father’s personal account.

Name: CLAIRE BENNETT.

I had never heard of her.

Olivia stared at the photograph attached to the old clinic profile.

Then her face changed.

“I know her.”

“Who is she?”

Olivia looked at me.

“She worked for your father.”

“Doing what?”

“She was his executive assistant.”

My mouth went dry.

Then Mason found the second file.

A photograph of my father standing beside Claire outside a hospital.

Claire was visibly pregnant.

The date was eight months before Sophie’s birth.

Olivia whispered, “That’s impossible.”

She was right.

An egg donor would not have been pregnant with our child.

Which meant the fertility records were hiding something much bigger.

Sophie might not have been conceived the way we had been told at all.

Mason found one more detail in Claire Bennett’s records.

Her “donation” had been processed at a fertility clinic partly owned by Pacific Crest Holdings.

The same shell company tied to Harbor Ridge.

Olivia stared at the screen.

“So Robert controlled the clinic too.”

“Yes.”

“Then he controlled the paperwork.”

Every answer looped back to my father.

I looked at the old photograph of Claire.

There was something familiar about her face that I couldn’t place.

Sophie wandered in holding a glass of water.

She glanced at the photo and stopped.

“Who’s that?”

“Her name was Claire.”

Sophie moved closer.

“I saw her before.”

Olivia and I both turned.

“Where?”

“At Grandma’s house.”

“When?”

Sophie frowned, trying to remember.

“After Mommy died.”

Claire Bennett was supposed to have disappeared years before Sophie was born.
