Chapter 1 - The Sentence That Broke Everything

I was supposed to be in New York until Friday.

Instead, a canceled meeting brought me back to our Malibu home two days early.

I heard Sophie before I even reached the kitchen.

“You’re lying!”

Then her tiny voice broke.

“You hurt me every day!”

I stopped in the hallway.

Vanessa stood beside the marble island, still wearing the calm expression everyone loved about her. Sophie was backed against the cabinets in pink pajamas, one arm tucked against her chest.

“Sophie,” Vanessa said softly, “stop making up stories.”

My daughter flinched.

“She isn’t making anything up,” I said.

Vanessa froze.

“Ethan? You’re home?”

I walked straight to Sophie. She grabbed my jacket and hid behind me.

That frightened me more than anything.

“What happened to your arm?”

“Nothing,” Vanessa answered immediately.

I pulled Sophie’s pajama sleeve back. Dark marks circled her small arm.

Vanessa stepped toward us. “She bruises easily.”

“Don’t.”

My voice made her stop.

For weeks, Sophie had changed whenever Vanessa entered a room. She stopped talking at dinner. She stopped asking me not to travel. She had even started locking her bedroom door.

I had convinced myself grief explained it.

Vanessa suddenly started crying.

“You know how difficult she’s been since her mother died.”

Sophie looked up at me.

“My mommy didn’t die.”

Vanessa’s crying stopped.

I stared at my daughter. “What did you say?”

Sophie pointed toward Vanessa.

“She told me Mommy is alive.”

Vanessa went pale.

I reached into my coat and placed an old photograph on the counter.

“I already knew about the bruises,” I said.

Vanessa stared at the picture.

Then I turned it over. A handwritten address was on the back.

“I also know you visited Sophie’s mother three weeks before everyone was told she died.”

Vanessa grabbed the edge of the island.

“That’s impossible.”

“No. What’s impossible is what the private investigator found yesterday.”

Sophie squeezed my hand.

Vanessa whispered, “Ethan, please.”

I looked directly at her.

“He found Olivia alive.”

The crystal glass slipped from Vanessa’s fingers and shattered.

Before I could say another word, Sophie whispered something that made me forget how to breathe.

“She comes here when you’re gone.”

I crouched in front of her.

“Mommy comes here?”

Sophie nodded.

“How?”

“She uses the little door downstairs.”

Vanessa’s head snapped toward her.

“What little door?”

Sophie pointed toward the wine cellar.

I had lived in that house for seven years. There was no door in the wine cellar that I knew about.

I told Sophie to stay behind me and headed downstairs.

Vanessa followed.

“Ethan, don’t do this while you’re angry.”

I unlocked the cellar and turned on the lights.

Rows of bottles glowed behind glass. At first, nothing looked unusual.

Then Sophie tugged my hand and pointed behind a wooden rack.

“That one.”

I pushed the rack.

It moved.

Behind it was a narrow steel door with a biometric lock.

My stomach tightened.

I pressed my thumb to the scanner.

The light turned green.

ACCESS GRANTED: ETHAN CARTER.

I stared at the display.

Someone had built a hidden entrance into my home.

And it recognized me.

Vanessa moved toward the cellar door, but Malcolm appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Ma’am, don’t.”

She stopped.

I looked back at the biometric screen. Under my name was a second field I had never noticed before: MASTER PROFILE SOURCE.

I tapped it.

The source was not the estate security system.

It was CARTER DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVE NETWORK.

My home security had been tied to the company without my knowledge.

“Who authorized that?” I asked Malcolm.

He shook his head. “Not me.”

Vanessa whispered, “Ethan, some doors are safer closed.”

I turned toward her.

“What is on the other side of this one?”

She looked at Sophie.

Then at me.

“Your wife.”

I stepped closer.

“You already admitted she’s alive.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I’m not talking about Olivia.”
