Chapter 14 - My Mother’s Confession

I drove straight to Eleanor’s house.
She was waiting in the library as if she knew I was coming.
I threw the fingerprint report onto the desk.
“You forged Olivia’s name.”
My mother stared at the page.
“Yes.”
No denial.
No excuse.
Just yes.
Olivia stood beside me, shaking with anger.
“You stole my daughter’s trust.”
Eleanor looked at her.
“I stopped Lucas from stealing it first.”
“You signed documents under my name.”
“I moved voting rights into a temporary protective structure.”
“Controlled by you.”
“Controlled by the family office.”
I slammed my hand on the desk.
“Stop calling crimes protection.”
My mother flinched.
For the first time in my life, I saw fear in her eyes.
Not fear of me.
Fear of what came next.
“I found Lucas’s accounts before Olivia did,” she said. “Your father was dying. The company was overleveraged. Harbor Point was about to reopen in the press. If everything collapsed at once, thousands of people lost jobs.”
“So you drugged me?”
“No.”
“You hired Vanessa.”
“As a private nurse. I did not order her to drug you.”
“Then who did?”
“I thought Lucas.”
Olivia shook her head.
“Vanessa took the blood sample. She knew exactly what was in his system.”
Eleanor went quiet.
Then she said, “There was one other person with access.”
“Who?”
“Your father.”
I laughed bitterly. “Dead men are doing a lot of work in this family.”
“He was alive then.”
My anger died.
Eleanor opened a safe behind a painting and removed a small black ledger.
“Your father knew he was losing control of Lucas. He also knew Olivia had found Harbor Point. He believed if you remembered too much, you would go to the FBI with her.”
“So he drugged me.”
“I don’t know.”
“You always know.”
She looked down.
“I found the medication vial in his study after the funeral.”
Olivia whispered, “Why didn’t you tell Ethan?”
“Because he was grieving his wife and his father. And because if I told him, the company died with them.”
I stared at the woman who raised me.
“You chose the company.”
“I chose what I thought would leave something for Sophie.”
The irony was almost obscene.
The entire nightmare had been justified in Sophie’s name while people fought to control her.
Eleanor handed me the ledger.
“Take this. It proves what your father started and what Lucas continued.”
I opened it.
Pages of account numbers.
Payments.
Names.
Detective Bell.
Vanessa.
Dr. Mercer.
Several board members.
Then one name circled in red.
MASON REED.
My missing private investigator.
I looked up.
“You knew Mason?”
Eleanor shook her head.
“No.”
The ledger showed he had been receiving monthly payments from Carter Development for almost two years.
Olivia whispered, “He didn’t find me for you.”
I felt cold.
“No.”
She looked at me.
“He was assigned to find me for them.”
My mother opened another section of the black ledger.
The pages were written in my father’s handwriting.
One entry was dated the day Olivia was admitted to Harbor Ridge.
O secure. E compliant. L unstable. V assigned.
Olivia read it over my shoulder.
“O is me.”
“E is Ethan,” I said.
“L is Lucas.”
We both looked at the final letter.
V assigned.
Vanessa.
Eleanor sank into a chair.
“I never saw this page.”
I believed her, which somehow made things worse.
My father had been managing all of us like pieces on a board.
Then Olivia noticed another line below it.
S remains clean. Do not test.
“Sophie?” I whispered.
Eleanor went pale.
My father had ordered tests on everyone except my daughter.
The question was why.
