Chapter 7 - The Cooperation Agreement

Julian cooperated.
Not heroically.
Not immediately.
His new attorney made him understand the risk.
The government could view him as participant or tool.
The difference depended on facts.
He provided devices.
Emails.
Calendar entries.
Board packets.
He admitted signing documents he did not read.
He admitted trying to identify my financial connections.
He admitted keeping quiet on the yacht.
None of those were crimes by themselves.
They were still character evidence of a different kind.
The investigators focused on Charles, Eleanor, and Marcus Bell.
Marcus remained missing.
His home was empty.
His passport had not been used.
Then one of our analysts found a wire transfer to a marina in Nassau.
A Hawthorne vendor paid $2.7 million to a vessel management company.
The vessel did not exist.
The beneficial owner did.
Marcus Bell.
He had been siphoning money independently from the Richardson scheme.
Thieves inside a sinking company stealing from other thieves.
Kira called it predictable.
I called it exhausting.
Then Marcus sent me an email directly.
YOU'RE BEING USED.
Attached was a spreadsheet.
It showed Charles had purchased Vantage fund shares through a nominee account six months earlier.
Impossible.
Vantage was privately held.
No public shares existed.
The document was fake.
But its purpose was clear.
Make regulators think Charles had a hidden relationship with me.
Connect me to Hawthorne before the debt purchase.
Insider trading by narrative.
I forwarded it to counsel.
Then Marcus sent another message.
ASK KIRA WHO GAVE HER THE HAWTHORNE FILE.
I looked at her.
Kira went still.
Our acquisition had come from Sovereign's special situations pipeline.
The original referral source was confidential.
Kira pulled the intake record.
Referral.
Anonymous legal source.
Date.
Nine months earlier.
Before I met Julian.
Attached note.
HAWTHORNE IS HIDING PENSION EXPOSURE.
FOLLOW MARCUS BELL.
Someone had tried to warn us before any of this became personal.
The anonymous source had left one identifying phrase.
THE CAPTAIN KEEPS TWO LOGS.
Kira looked at me.
“The yacht captain.”
We both understood.

The man who had watched the Richardsons for years had been quietly building a record.
