Chapter 12 - Julian's Testimony

Julian’s cooperation agreement did not make him innocent.

It made him useful.

He admitted everything.

Signing unread documents.

Fishing for my financial contacts.

Allowing his mother to humiliate me.

Keeping quiet when he knew the behavior was wrong.

Then he described the family system.

Charles created emergencies.

Eleanor created narratives.

Julian cleaned up appearances.

That had been his role since college.

“Apologize to the banker.”

“Charm the donor.”

“Sign this.”

“Sit there.”

“Don’t embarrass us.”

He thought obedience was loyalty.

Until obedience put pension money in his name.

At the grand jury, prosecutors showed him the offshore trust.

He identified signatures.

Emails.

Family code words.

Then he disclosed something nobody expected.

A separate hotel reserve account.

Twenty-two million dollars.

Charles had hidden it.

Enough to cover much of the immediate pension hole.

Why had Charles not used it?

Because the money was earmarked for a luxury acquisition in St. Barts.

Even while employees’ retirement assets were exposed, Charles preserved money for another trophy property.

That revelation destroyed his “save the jobs” defense.

The restructuring monitor seized the reserve.

Pension accounts were restored.

Employees avoided loss.

I should have felt victorious.

Instead, I felt tired.

Julian asked to see me after testimony.

We met in a quiet coffee shop.

Not Rowan Street.

He apologized.

No speech.

No ring.

No request for another chance.

“I treated your dignity like something negotiable because I was afraid of my mother’s anger.”

I listened.

“I’m sorry.”

I nodded.

“Thank you.”

He waited.

Nothing else came.

Finally he asked.

“Is there any version of us after this?”

I thought about the yacht.

The sunglasses.

The sentence.

Maybe go downstairs for a minute.

“No.”

He looked down.

I continued.

“That doesn’t mean I hate you.”

“I know.”

“It means the door closed before the siren arrived.”

He cried.

I did too.

Then we left separately.

Some endings are sad because nobody is lying anymore.
