Chapter 5 - Eleanor's Files

Eleanor surrendered the drive.
Not voluntarily.
Her attorney negotiated a forensic image while preserving privilege claims.
The contents were not privileged.
They were catastrophic.
Private emails.
Board drafts.
Loan schedules.
Messages between Eleanor and Marcus Bell.
Eleanor had known Hawthorne was insolvent for nearly a year.
She pushed Charles to keep spending publicly because a visible decline would trigger lender panic.
Yacht parties.
Foundation galas.
Designer renovations.
They were not extravagance despite insolvency.
They were part of the insolvency strategy.
Appearance as collateral.
Then we found messages about me.
ELEANOR: JULIAN'S GIRL MAY KNOW CAPITAL PEOPLE.
MARCUS: KEEP HER CLOSE.
ELEANOR: SHE'S A COFFEE GIRL.
MARCUS: THEN SHE'LL BE FLATTERED.
I stared at the screen.
Kira cursed.
Julian closed his eyes.
“I didn’t know about these.”
I believed him.
That did not save him.
He still went along with using me once his mother suggested I might be useful.
Then a later message.
ELEANOR: SHE KNOWS TOO MUCH ABOUT THE YACHT PAPER.
MARCUS: HUMILIATE HER.
ELEANOR: WHY?
MARCUS: PEOPLE DEFEND THEMSELVES EMOTIONALLY WHEN EMBARRASSED.
THEY MAKE MISTAKES.
My skin went cold.
The yacht humiliation had not been spontaneous.
The martini.
The insults.
Maybe even the shove.
They wanted me angry.
Public.
Reactive.
If I retaliated recklessly after acquiring their debt, they could claim personal vendetta.
Potential lender misconduct.
Bad-faith foreclosure.
Maybe regulatory leverage.
Kira looked at me.
“They wanted video.”
I remembered the guests lifting phones.
Eleanor knew cameras would come out.
Julian stared at his mother.
“You set that up?”
Eleanor said nothing.
Then Charles stood.
“I didn’t know.”
Eleanor turned on him.
“You knew enough.”
That sentence cracked the marriage open.
Charles shouted.
“You told me she was nobody.”
Eleanor laughed.
“She was nobody until someone called her president.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
The room quieted.
“I was president when you spilled the martini.”
“I was president when Julian stayed seated.”
“I was president when you thought I was staff.”
“That’s the part you still don’t understand.”
Eleanor’s face hardened.
Then Kira’s phone rang.
She listened.
Her eyes changed.
“What?”
I asked.
“Our forensic team found the pension money.”
“Where?”
“Moved yesterday.”
“To what account?”
She looked at Charles.
Then Eleanor.
“An account controlled by Julian.”
