Chapter 2 - The Debt Under the Debt

We left the yacht under police supervision.

The Richardsons did not.

The vessel was detained pending lien enforcement.

Charles screamed at the captain.

Eleanor called three attorneys.

Julian called me fourteen times.

I answered none.

Kira and I drove straight to Sovereign’s temporary harbor office.

She placed the Hawthorne file on the table.

“It’s worse than the acquisition memo suggested.”

“How much?”

“Nominal secured exposure is one hundred eighty-six million.”

I stared.

“The public filing showed ninety-two.”

“Because half the borrowing sits in related entities.”

She opened a second folder.

Hawthorne Leisure had borrowed against hotel receivables.

Then against future membership revenue.

Then against land it no longer fully owned.

Then Charles signed a side letter pledging a pension reserve associated with Richardson Hospitality Services.

My anger changed.

“How many employees?”

“Eight hundred and forty-three current participants.”

“And retirees?”

“Two hundred eleven.”

If Charles defaulted badly enough, the workers could be dragged into litigation before anyone realized their retirement money had been used as decoration in a financing package.

That was no longer about Eleanor’s martini.

Or Julian’s cowardice.

It was about people who had never stepped onto that yacht.

Kira watched me.

“You can accelerate everything.”

“Take the properties.”

“Push Hawthorne into restructuring.”

“Or?”

“Offer a standstill if they segregate the pension assets immediately.”

I hated the idea of giving Charles anything.

That was exactly why I knew I had to consider it.

My phone lit again.

Julian.

This time, I answered.

“Sienna.”

His voice sounded different.

Smaller.

“Were you really going to take my parents’ yacht?”

“No.”

A pause.

“The loan documents were.”

He swallowed.

“Can we talk?”

“You had a chance to talk when your mother shoved me.”

“I froze.”

“No.”

“You chose comfort.”

He exhaled.

“I didn’t know who you were.”

That sentence finished whatever little affection remained.

“I was the same person before Kira said my title.”

Silence.

Then Julian said.

“My dad wants to meet.”

“Of course he does.”

“He says there’s something you don’t know.”

I almost laughed.

“Kira just spent an hour showing me things your father didn’t know I knew.”

Julian lowered his voice.

“He says the pension pledge isn’t his signature.”

I stopped.

“What?”

“He says somebody forged it.”

Kira heard through speaker.

She leaned forward.

“Ask him whose signature he thinks it is.”

I did.

Julian hesitated.

Then answered.

May you like

“Mine.”
