Chapter 9 - TWELVE HOURS

They had twelve hours.

Nathan's first instinct was to storm the headquarters.

Samuel stopped him.

"If you act emotionally, they call you unstable and finish the deal."

Grace almost smiled.

"Funny how often powerful people use that word when someone won't cooperate."

They built a legal strike instead.

Emergency injunction.

DNA authentication.

Trust verification.

Forensic analysis of Claire's records.

Owen gathered security logs connecting Victoria to the disabled kitchen cameras.

The administrator account had been activated from a device registered to Arthur Ashford's private network.

Victoria had not acted alone.

At 3:00 a.m., Detective Ellis called.

"We found the source of Grace's kidnapping warrant."

"Who?" Nathan asked.

"Martin Hale filed it, but the supporting affidavit came from Ashford Family Office."

Grace closed her eyes.

"Victoria's father."

"Yes."

Nathan asked, "Can you charge him?"

"We're building it."

At 5:30 a.m., Lily woke on the couch in Nathan's study.

She walked toward him carrying a stuffed rabbit.

"Daddy?"

He looked at Grace.

She nodded once.

Nathan crouched.

"Yeah?"

Lily climbed into his arms.

The weight of her nearly broke him.

He had missed her first word.

First step.

First birthday.

Every fever.

Every nightmare.

Every ordinary Tuesday.

"Are you my daddy for real?" she asked.

Nathan swallowed.

"I think I am."

Grace said softly, "You are."

Lily smiled.

Then she touched his face.

"Do you live here?"

"Yes."

"Can we live here too?"

Grace froze.

Nathan did not answer for her.

"We'll figure out what makes you and your mom safe."

Grace looked at him.

That answer mattered.

At 8:40 a.m., Samuel filed the injunction.

At 9:05, the court scheduled an emergency hearing.

At 9:20, Robert signed preliminary transfer papers with Ashford Capital anyway.

At 9:31, Nathan walked into court.

Arthur Ashford was already there.

So was Victoria.

Her criminal attorney sat beside her.

She smiled at Grace.

"Still playing family?"

Grace looked at Lily's bruise photograph in the evidence binder.

"No."

She looked back at Victoria.

"Ending yours."

The judge entered.

Samuel presented the original trust.

Arthur's attorney attacked it as fabricated.

Then the court-appointed expert authenticated Claire's paper, ink, signatures, and vault record.

The judge froze the transfer.

Nathan exhaled.

Then Arthur's attorney stood.

"Your Honor, there is another issue regarding Mr. Cole's standing."

He produced a document.

A birth certificate.

Nathan's.

But the mother's name was not Claire Cole.

May you like

It was Eleanor Ashford.

Victoria's mother.
